Potatoes as the Flavorless AS
« on: July 24, 2013, 10:17:44 AM »

I landed here after listening to a podcast by obesity researcher Stephan Guyenet discuss why Chris Voight dropped a lot of weight eating only potatoes for 60 days (he is the WA potato commissioner - he was protesting WIC dropping potatoes).

Stephan believes the key to solving obesity is reducing food reward.  He mentioned Seth Roberts

I do think a potato fast (all the rage on the paleo forums) works because it lowers the set point.

I was on my second potato hack when I heard this.

Has anyone tried using potatoes instead of oil for AS?   A plain potato baked is nearly tasteless.  It tastes a little like dirt, actually.

I have, and I noticed the same thing - AS setting in after the first day or two.  Mine weren't totally tasteless - I was adding beef broth and pepper when mashing them.  But the reduced appetite was appreciable and felt like the SLD AS.

Thank you for your reply.

I tried the extra light olive oil and my fasting blood sugar shot up to 119 this morning.  This is the typical reading I used to get doing low carb/high fat.

The potato hack shockingly brought it down reliably, and I have many, many data points, to 80-85 fasting.

I am going to have to experiment a bit.  I will have to keep eating potatoes to hold the blood sugar in check, but I do want to add the ELOO to see if I can get a run of more weight loss out of it.  It is not looking promising.

How can anyone say that the good old spud is tasteless?  It's subtle ;-)
