Progress on the Shangri La Diet 4th July 2011
Progress check after twenty four weeks on the Shangri La Diet.

As well as my daily chat in the "My SLD Page" section I also post here every six weeks. Here goes. Headline loss of 54.8 pounds, an average of 2.3 pounds per week. I have been changing my oil intake and currently take 1 tablespoon of sugar and 3 tablespoons of Flaxseed Oil. I take my oil an hour after my evening meal. I have also been roughly calorie counting, I have a high protein meal replacement shake with psyllium fibre each morning and another three scoops of protein powder as a shake with it. Lunch is light, usually a large cup of soup, a roll and a diet drink, and evening meal is a diet ready meal for convenience meaning a daily total of around 1800 kCal. Weekdays I drink 2 litres of water as well as tea and coffee. At the weekend I relax and do less walking, usually drink less water and eat more fun stuff.

Exercise is a visit to the gym every three days to do some basic weight training.

Im taking general vitamin supplements, with extra calcium and vitamin D - a test earlier in the year showed I needed Vitamin D.

I might be asking a supremely stupid question, but why is there such a loss in muscle mass? I understand that the final percentage of muscle is reflected as a ratio against the fat and water percentage in terms of the new, lower weight, so the overall percentage is higher but the numbers indicate that you've lost about 12lbs of muscle. How does that work, particularly since you've been weight training?

A good point, basically I don't think I am eating enough to maintain the muscle and there is also an argument that the body will lose some if it isn't required. I'm not doing a huge amount of weights and those I am doing I am getting stronger in, but I would need to create a calorie surplus if I was going to gain muscle properly and this tends to add fat too.

But like a lot of stuff I've read, personal experience tends to be different!

You may have lost muscle because you have much less weight to carry around. Leg muscle, for example.

Yes - makes a lot of sense, I hadn't thought about it in that way until I was watching a youtube video about weight training and they said that. It is not really noticeable because my "power to weight ratio" (what they talk about with cars and motorbikes) has improved for my legs :)
