I started this diet 32 days and 18 pounds ago. I'm a 39 year-old, 5'7"
male. I weighed 180 lbs when I started; as of this morning I'm at
162. I had been doing a half-assed job of Atkins for some years. One
year ago I started running and dropped about 10 lbs. But under Atkins
I was eating so much high caloric food and was not controlling the
portion size, so my weight stayed high even though I was exercising a
great deal.

Under SLD I've been able to control the portion size. I almost never
have seconds, and I've reduced the amount of food I eat a great deal
with very little hunger. This is a real first for me, since I've never
managed to control my portions, and in the past I've only lost weight
when I've exercised huge amounts. I liked Atkins because I felt like
it was okay to eat lots of meat and cheese. I lost weight at first,
and to some extent I've kept it off, but I stopped losing weight after
two months or so. Being able to control portions really gives me a lot
of confidence in my future with this diet.

I started taking sugar water for the first few weeks, and saw rapid
weight loss, but I also got headaches, and would find myself tired
afterwards. Switched to ELOO a few weeks ago and have had better luck.
I had an occasional upset stomach after taking the oil at first, but
this has gradually gone away as I've gotten used to the oil.

Haven't tried any other oils, although the success people have had
with Canola oil is tempting. I guess I'm swayed by the whole
"Mediterranean diet" advantages of ELOO.

I've been weighing myself every day. I see pretty steady loss through
the week, with a bump upwards of 1-2 pounds on Sunday, which is my day
off from running. I find that plotting my daily weight loss is a good
motivation for me. Plus, I'm less likely to gorge myself if I know I
have a morning weigh in coming up.

After I dropped 10 pounds I upped my running times from 30 minutes/day
to 45 minutes/day, since I felt lighter and much less likely to injure
myself.

I typically eat 2 scrambled eggs with cheese for breakfast, and I find
that getting some protein in the morning is really essential for me.
Skipping breakfast, or having something high in carbs typically leaves
me hungry throughout the day, despite the ELOO. I take my morning dose
of ELOO 1-2 hours after breakfast. I normally eat an apple and some
carrots for lunch, whereas before I had a large lunch; this change has
been the primary difference in my eating habits. Have the afternoon
ELOO 1-2 hours after lunch. Then a sensible but by no means spartan
dinner.

Already I need to buy new pants, and have added two new holes to my
belt. I'm also excited about food and cooking for the first time in
years. The freedom from the Atkins-y restrictions has sparked my
interest in cooking again, and I've been making pesto and calzones and
all sorts of good stuff. I just eat sensibly now.

Just convinced my brother to give the diet a shot. My wife still
thinks that I'm crazy for "drinking oil".

Still at the same weight two days later. I'm redoubling my efforts to reduce my portion sizes. One of the most interesting things I'm finding about the SLD is how it makes me re-examine my attitudes toward food. I feel like I'm entitled to overeat, entitled to have seconds at dinner, entitled to treat myself. I'm making a conscious effort to combat those feelings and only eat what I need.

Splitbamboo - She knows my occasionally obsessive moods, and is probably just expressing a little healthy skepticism as her way of protecting me from myself.

Weighed 160 this morning, down 2 pounds from yesterday. It salvaged a week in which I didn't lose anything, which was frustrating me since I did a better job of eating this week than I ever did before. Last weekend was the first time I didn't see a big spike upward in my weight caused by weekend overindulgence. So I thought it would be a good week, but then I didn't lose anything.

Typical me, though: I've had great success thus far, and the first time I have four consecutive days without a loss I panic and start worrying that I'm not going to lose anything more.

Made a big mistake yesterday. I normally have two scrambled eggs with cheese for breakfast, a holdover from my Atkins days. Yesterday I tried to cut back to one egg with no cheese, and this didn't leave me satisfied, even after my morning dose of ELOO. I was hungry and grumpy all day. I had gone on a 45 minute run before breakfast, and I think that the smaller breakfast just didn't give me enough energy afterwards. I ran 60 minutes this morning, had my normal two egg breakfast with cheese, and I feel fine now.

I guess I had been inspired by all of the posts here about how much everyone is counting their calories, so I tried to cut back. But in retrospect, I think I'm better off cutting back on dinner and working harder at leaving food on my plate.

Live and learn.

You will hit plateaus, and eventually a place you want to stay for maintenance.  Waiting out the effects of the diet is an interesting lesson to learn, but patience works.

Lots of good posts over in the FAQ section, btw.

Hey RickM,

That's terrific!

I just discovered you!  Remember to change the subject line on the 1st post - isn't it like "34 days 21 lbs" ?!

Amazing!

rickm - you should post here more.  Your story sounds very impressive!   I am very curious to see your results over the next few months.

Weighed 158 this morning!

Started doing a very short set of yoga in the evenings as well, mainly because I've been falling asleep at 8:30, and that cuts into my time with my wife. The yoga also helps with general fitness and flexibility.

Bought some canola oil last night at the store, but haven't taken my first dose yet.

I especially like what you said about your relationship to food: "I'm also excited about food and cooking for the first time in years."  I continued to cook and to be interested in food even at my fattest, but my interest was never whole-hearted, the way it had been when I was young and scrawny.  Now, suddenly, I can cook and eat with unadulterated pleasure.  I foresee a whole new generation of foodies, foodies who just plain love food, no guilt attached.

Keep us posted on your progress, RickM, it's so encouraging to share this experience with other people.

157 pounds this morning. I realize I shouldn't get too excited about any day-to-day weight fluctuations, but I was frustrated last week when I was eating really well and didn't see any immediate results. Maybe they're finally paying off now.

So far I like the canola oil. Much less taste than the ELOO, and it seems to keep me a little more satisfied. But I shouldn't draw any conclusions until I've been on it for a few weeks.

Neat.  Not to mention, as my mom points out (she is using canola and has lost twenty pounds on it), much cheaper too.

My goal is 159 (160.2 with a safety cushion) so you have met/beat my goal. ;)

Weighed 155 pounds this morning. The canola oil is working well, but it's still too early to tell.

45 days in, and have lost a total of 25 pounds thus far.

Still at 155 lbs today. Made it through a weekend with lots of distractions (including ice cream cake and deep-dish pizza), and at least didn't gain anything. I lost 4 pounds last week, so I guess I'm due for a slow week this week anyway.

Forgot to take my oil this morning. Just had lunch, and will take my afternoon dose as usual. It will be interesting to see how my hunger changes, having missed the morning oil.
