After a lifetime of not weighing what I wanted, the idea that I can choose my weight is a stupendous dream for my mind to grasp. All along I've been hopeful, but not daring to believe in it, until it becomes real and lasting.  But now I live with feeling happiness with my body, and that feeling is a priceless gift. -- Heidi 555

But I now have a two week vacation looming so that will disrupt things :)

Only if you let it!! ;)

If you aim for 80% good decisions and only 20% less-than-ideal decisions, you would likely come out the other end of your vacation fairly intact....

235.6 pounds this morning, which is another all time low weight on these scales. I need to record some body measurements to see if that is different.

235.8 today (oops) didn't expect to have gone up slightly but perhaps the munchies got the better of me yesterday and I had too many carbs in the evening.

Routine during the day was slightly different as I had a business meeting but otherwise I still got out walking and eat exactly the same as I do every day.

  • Hi - I am Jimmy D43 and happy to be a new SLDer.
QUITE CONFUSED ABOUT SUGAR WATER AND STEVIA MIX ISSUE
« Reply #784 on: August 08, 2012, 09:18:03 pm »

Greetings All - I am a newbie too. JimmyD 43 here. This is a message to all. Thing is I don't know how to send a message to everyone. i I hope this accomplished that?
I have read and read good portions of Seth's book but I am confused about "sugar water mix for those of us who don't want to do fructose (nor know where to find that)?
I started the SLD two weeks ago. I am 69 years young - 5" 11" in tall (ahem, used to be 6 feet once)and weighed in onj July 24, 2012 at 207 lbs. Since on SLD I dropped to 205.6 (then up this AM to 206.6). I have no problem with ELOO - even am trying Flaxseed oil with nose pinched due to latter bitter taste. But here's the confusion: I have been using Stevia & water combo in between. You see I read in FAQs yesterday that Stevia is not recommended b/c it has no calories. (N.B. can't find no-no on Stevia in Kindle version of revised ed. of Seth''s book). Please someone help me understand why we wouldn't want a sweetener added to H2O like Stevia? Why wouldn't we want a sweet flavor like Stevia without ANY calories over Fructose WITH calories?  If Stevia is really a no-no are there other sugar substitutes I can buy that have calories but do not affect folks like me who are sugar & flour addicts? I am so compulsive about food with sugar (sweets & the like).
I am glad I am on board.

Hey Jimmy, apologies for the slow reply - I've been away on vacation.

The way we think SLD works for some is to do with flavourless calories - if you have no calories then the association doesn't happen and the net effect on your body is likely to be zero. That said, sweeteners work in interesting ways and you would have to search the forum to see if anyone has had success that way.

The Stevia link seems to help with sugar craving, a particular aspect of appetite.

In my own case I use ELOO as I get the classic spike with sugar water - the initial surge with the sugar and then the plummet. I don't have the patience to wait, and actually don't like that amount of sugar - I keep wanting to brush my teeth which introduces more flavour.

What you are looking to do with SLD, or High Protein, drinking lots of water etc is to get your appetite under control, but as you will read elsewhere you will see other techniques added in to help.

Back from vacation, 236.6 pounds today which isn't bad - a gain of 0.8 pounds since I last checked in.

I chilled out, eat more than usual, eat differently, but also had high protein days. I also got some kefir grains and started experimenting with that - my wife thinks I'm daft.

So interesting days were - found a steak offer locally and had that for lunch but only eat one or two of the fries. Found a crazy place that did a 5 egg omlette - couldn't believe the size of it but somehow lost a pound in weight that day.

Now to see how I get on!

Settling back in to work (taking ages :)) and beginning to shrink again, 233.6 pounds today so there might be a rebound!

Changed a few things last week, gave up on my Kefir experiment because it was very messy and a lot of hard work. I've put my grains in the freezer and will see what I will do.

And on Sunday I bought a new business suit to fit the new me - still getting used to what I see in the mirror. I'm not in a job that needs me to dress formally every work day so my "old" suit was far far too big as I bought it just before the diet!

I'm well, thanks, but crazy busy.  The summer has flown past - not sure where it's gone!!  Most of my non-working time has gone into renovations this summer, both at our son's new apartment (we own the house, he'll be out tenant in half of it), and at home building a chicken coop in the back yard.  I'm about to become a backyard homesteader, with my own little flock of 6 laying hens.  I'm so excited to be producing my own free-range eggs!

I'm nursing a tendonitis in my wrist right now, brought on by too much sawing with a hand saw (the power saw was in town at the other project - darn it!), so typing is rather laborious with a splint on my right hand.  The pain is going on three weeks, but the splint is new tonight.  Feels good, but doing most things requires some adjustment.  Have you ever been splinted?

Not much happening weight-wise.  I cruise along above where I was this time last year, but without the time, energy or motivation to do much about it.  I am not at a weight that is any impact on my health, I want to lose 10-20 lbs for vanity, nothing else, so without vanity for motivation, not much happens.  I usually eat pretty clean.  It's harvest season and the fresh fruits and veggies are wonderful.  I'm not about to limit my intake of fresh Ontario peaches and pears and corn on the cob...

How are you?  Enjoying the summer biking?

You always seem to keep busy - particularly in the summer months! I guess Injuries come with the territory when you are active - hope it clears quickly. I've only been splinted once and hated it - cramped up something really bad with the lack of movement but had to grit my teeth to get through it as the situation was worse. That was for my elbow.

If you've reached maintenance then weight is really secondary - I'm getting near to the stage when I'd like to shift my focus to exercise or getting fitter - I've gone backwards in the number of push ups I can do and it brings home that it is something I need to do regularly. I stop losing weight if I do though, so I've got a little farther to go before I switch modes.

Vacation time was good for biking, tried a few other bikes and I have some more saving to do for my next motorcycle - funny how losing weight has emphasised how long I am which is borne out when I try to find a bike to fit. Weather has been so-so here, lots of warm rain - nice to have dry stuff for biking :)

Until about 2 weeks ago, we were having a parchingly dry summer.  Many farmers have lost crops like corn and there was no second cut of hay for the cattle.  Will make for an interesting winter.  But it was primo biking weather!

My hubby is 6'3" tall and has had to buy different saddles that sit him further back to make his bikes comfortable.  He's got a large cruiser, a Honda Valkyrie, and a Triumph Tiger for the more rugged stuff.  What do you ride?

He's talking about getting a "project bike" to fix up during the winter, something cheap, so I'm thinking he should get something that I could use when he is finished.  Right now, both his bikes would be too big for me.

I've got a BMW RS and looking at a BMW GS (quite like the tiger) but tried an older GS to discover they are more cramped than the more recent GS bikes. I've long arms and legs - arms aren't really the problem but my legs are.

A project bike sounds like fun - I would go for something light and offroad style - tall enough but not too heavy.

PS 234.2 pounds today - which I don't mind as the previous day's loss was 2 lbs. I had a bit more to snack on and eat in the evening :)

I was 235.8 the day before yesterday so happy enough.
