The wonderful thing about SLD is that you don't have to actually restrict yourself.  There has never been a point during the last 6 months where I felt like I was being restricted in what I could eat.  I have been eating healthier, for sure, but that's a side effect of the AS for me, not because I'm trying to avoid "bad" foods.  And there are plenty of times when I eat the same old crap I always used to eat, just much much much less of it! -- goblyn

Digestive Enzyme Problems
« on: November 05, 2010, 07:43:38 am »

I could just PM Karky, as she's the queen of Digestive Enzymes, but I figure maybe others will have something to add as well.

Sometime over the summer I started taking Digestive Enzymes.  My first bottle was from GNC, their brand.  I had absolutely no problems with those at all, though I never really noticed if they helped or not.  Then I got the second bottle from The Vitamin Shoppe, which was cheaper than GNC and I found them to be really effective.  I ran out of the VS ones a month ago, and since there is a GNC very close to me (VS is about 20 miles away), I just had to settle for that brand again.

There was maybe a week or so that I wasn't taking any enzymes beyond Acidophilus (which isn't an enzyme, but rather a probiotic...), and then started up with the GNC brand.  The first day I took them, I noticed that I ended up getting queasy, and the day after that I got actually sick, threw up a few times, but I chalked it up to the stomach flu, as I was having other issues as well, not just vomiting.

Anyways, I didn't take anything for about a week, as I didn't want to upset my stomach unnecessarily, and then started taking the enzymes again, except taking them with food (as opposed to with my vitamin in the morning).  No real reason for it, except that I kind of wondered if there was a connection.  Of course because my routine is to take pills in the morning, I wasn't very consistant with the enzymes, maybe remembering them 4 days a week if that.

So last night I took them with my supper, and OMG, I thought I was going to vomit again.  Really bad nausea, plus pain that was almost like gas pain.  It eventually passed without me throwing up thank god, but it was still pretty upsetting.

Now...granted, part of me isn't ready to blame the enzymes yet, as I have felt super super sleepy all week long and thought for a long time that I might have been fighting off some bug.  But, at the same time, I can't help but notice the connection between the enzymes and my sickness.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?  The digestive enzymes are specifically supposed to HELP with this kind of problem, not aggravate it!  I am going to just throw out the bottle that I have and try to get to the Vitamin Shoppe ASAP, but I'm just wondering what the problem could possibly be.  It seems strange that the other bottle I had would have not given me any symptoms at all, and yet this one is bothering me.  I'm almost half wondering if maybe this bottle had been adulterated with something...

The vitamin shoppe ones were actually cheaper than walmart when I bought them (on sale), I got a bigger bottle than I could get at Walmart so the price per bottle was higher, but the price per pill was much lower.

I'm hoping it was just the bottle, and if I buy new ones I won't have any problems.  I am, however, waiting until the next time I get paid to contemplate buying more.
