Newbie looking for clipped nose!!!
« on: November 11, 2009, 02:43:59 pm »

Hi anyone! I'm a newbie who needs to lose about 40-50 pounds. I would like to do the nose-clipping thing as oil won't be good for me (gallbladder problems) and sugar, well diabetes in family so don't want to go there! I'd like a bit more explanation on the nose-clip....I bought one, so do I just nose-clip most of my meals and my body will think I'm not ingesting any calories??? Also, if that is the case, it would be interesting to study if people with no sense of smell are all thin...that would prove the theory!!! :o   How much can I expect to lose on the nose-clipping and will I get AS or just my body will no "recognize" the caloric intake? thanks a lot!

Hi roxymaya,

Here is the link for the noseclipping area of this forum.  You may find a lot of answers there.

I am not an expert on noseclipping, but my understanding is this:  Noseclipping (like oil, sugar, crazy-spicing, etc.) works well for a lot of people, but not everyone takes to it, so the only way to know how much weight you will lose is to try it.  Heidi is probably the most knowledgeable noseclipper here.  I believe that she went from 140 lbs to 120 lbs in a year with noseclipping.  Someone with more than 20 lbs to lose might lose faster, though.

The goal would be to get appetite suppression, just like the goal of oil, sugar, etc.  Noseclipping is just another way to get flavorless calories.  That being the case, you will want to observe the 2-hour flavor-free window around your noseclipped meals.  In other words, don't let flavors of any kind enter your mouth within one hour before or one hour after your noseclipped meal.  Some people even brush and floss their teeth after the meal with the noseclips still on so that they don't accidentally taste anything still on their teeth when they take the noseclips off.

Your body will still get the calories, just as it would if you were taking flavorless calories in oil or sugar.  However, it should reduce your appetite so ultimately you will consume fewer calories, and therefore lose weight.

Good luck and welcome!

Hi and thank you for the reply...still a bit confused as I read other posts and read others saying that with clipped nose you don't have to follow the 2-hour window...hummm???!!!

Hi roxymaya!

The idea is to ingest a calorie payload that is dissociated from taste (often referred to here as "SLD calories").  This means that:

  • You must select something tasteless or near enough to it (such as light oil or sugar water) to act as your SLD calories, or, if oil or sugar water are not options for you, you must select some other calorie payload to ingest and do whatever it takes to make it a tasteless experience.
  • You must avoid tasting anything else for a recommended minimum of an hour before, and an hour after, you ingest your tastefree calories (referred to as the tastefree window).  That is to ensure that your mind does not associate the taste of anything else that you eat or drink with the calories that you took the trouble not to taste.  Otherwise, your tastefree calories will be "contaminated" and rendered ineffective or less effective.
Noseclipping or nosestuffing (which I'll refer to collectively as noseblocking) are aids to assist you not to taste your calorie payload.  If you ingest light oil or sugar water, you may not need the additional assistance of noseblocking.  Some people (like myself) are sensitive even to the taste of light oils, and prefer the assistance of noseblocking even with oil.  If you have no option but to eat normal foods, then you will certainly have to use tactics like noseblocking to render your experience of that food as tasteless.

The tastefree window is unconditional.  Whether or not you employ the assistance of noseblocking, you still need to observe the tastefree window -- period.

If you eat normal foods, then you will need to take great care to rinse particles of that food, and the taste of that food, from your mouth -- using plain water only -- before you remove your noseblocking.  This will be easiest with foods that are very bland -- for example, plain white bread, or plain boiled white rice.  Curries are definitely contraindicated for this purpose. :)
