For the first time in memory a diet is working. Without SLD my body would kick into starvation mode. -- Numpty01

Maybe I'm a bit uncomfortable with the idea what I'm on a diet. Or rather what I call, "a modified eating schedule that involves the consumption of olive oil", which mostly causes people to stare blankly at me. Basically, I've just told people that it breaks the food flavor/calorie association which helps suppress my appetite and so I don't get hungry, and thus lose weight. Maybe that's not quite right?

How do you explain the SLD to someone in a sentence or two with out getting a befuddled stare?

I usually say that I've been studying nutrition and experimenting with different types of fat intake to see how my body responds to new types of fuel. I'll add that I've been dropping pounds, sleeping better, and maintaining a much more stable blood sugar level. I'll then go into the theories behind SLD if they express interest, but usually I just get a "ohhhhhh."  8)

I just say that I'm focusing on adding good fats into my diet and that it helps keep me from being hungry.  Most people can wrap their heads around it.  The few people who've expressed further interest have received a more detailed explanation, but I only do it if they show significant interest.  Most people are so entrenched into the lowfat lifestyle for weight loss that they aren't all that interested.

Back when I was doing ELOO shots as my SLD dose, I prepared my office (I work in a small office of 5 people) and one girl thought it was interesting (though not enough to try it herself) another thought I'd probably kill myself eating all that fat, a few were disgusted and finally one person found the whole thing so stupid and ridiculous that she laughed at me every time I took my dose.

I now do my shake in the morning before I get to work, and though I'm happy to report my loss to everyone, I try my hardest to avoid talking about it to avoid the disgusted/ridiculing comments.

That in itself is probably the hardest thing to deal with about the diet, the reaction of other people.  It doesn't matter how much you lose, some people just can't accept it.

And that's why I've kept it pretty close to the vest, goblyn.  I told my mom about it when she asked how I was losing weight.  She was skeptical, but tried it.  She had a horrible time with nausea that wouldn't go away even after she stopped taking the oil.  She blamed the diet, was angry at me, and was sure I was going to kill myself doing this.  Months later they finally figured out that they had switched manufacturers on one of her medications, and she was having a reaction to a filler in the medicine.  She was a bit sheepish as she apologized to me for being so mad at me.  But it just reinforced to me how funny people can be about things like this, so I make sure people are really open to listening before I will share the details.  Just know that you have the last laugh as you lose weight because you are open minded.  8)

I have been hiding my olive oil in my desk drawer for the past month, somewhat terrified of getting caught taking a swig.  Thankfully I am somewhat isolated in my office, but I have no idea what I will say when my boss walks in and catches me sippin' on the ELOO.

I agree, goblyn.  I think that for some people, it gets at the heart of their bias against "fluffy" people (my kids' kind term when they were little).  I really think that even generally very nice people sometimes have a deepseated disgust towards those of us whose bodies store fat easily, a holier than thou attitude that is wickedly challenged by the idea that a little bit of oil could set things right.

They'd much rather continue thinking that obese people lack will power and that they themselves would never allow themselves to get "fat"...

I really hope Seth's method gets spread around to all of the suffering heavy people out there.

kate, I think you got to the heart of the matter right there.  I hate to say it, but I totally agree.  I think even other "fluffy" (lol) people who haven't tried SLD also think its simply a lack of will power, too much laziness, too much of a good thing (which is why most of us get so damn depressed about it, its so easy to be down on yourself when you have an issue you think you should be able to change with no problem), etc...  And those who AREN'T already "fluffy," well forget it, they see all sorts of reasons why you'd be losing weight that has nothing to do with SLD, or they'll explain the SLD phenomena as something as simple (and ridiculous) as "well of course if you replace a greasey hamburger with a few tablespoons of olive oil you'll lose weight" but little do they realize that we might eat even less than they do, but thanks to years of regular dieting, our bodies have revolted against us!

I've been explaining the diet in a nutshell when people ask.  It's resulted in some interesting conversations.  Turns out that a few people in the office have conducted their own weight loss experiments and had success.
