Exercises to reduce love handles?
« on: April 21, 2009, 06:25:35 AM »

Okay, for the most part, you all seem to know an awful lot about exercises and different techniques.

I have a problem that is apparently pretty uncommon for men, in that I have pretty generous "love handles."  I don't know a single male outside of my own family (save extremely obese men) who have this problem.  Currently my bf weighs almost 10lbs more than me, and yet because he has no love handles to speak of that area of his body (what is that anyways technically?  i call it the belly region lol, I suppose it could be considered the natural waist, but since clothing designers haven't designed pants for men that are meant to be worn at the natural waist since the 70's I refuse to call it that) is 10" LESS than mine!

They make me horribly self concious, and prevent me from wearing anything "trendy" for clothing, since nobody cuts men's cloths to allow for fat hips!

So I'm wondering, especially considering the vast majority of you all are female, and thus more likely to have this issue, are there any exercise that actually work to reduce the fat in your love handles?

Even at my thinnest (which, admittedly wasn't that much thinner, about 20 lbs less than what I weigh now) I still had love handles.  I'm just worried that no matter what weight I'm at, I'm going to look much bigger than I am due to these damn love handles!!!!

Help!!!!

My new hula hoop is awesome.  Get a weighted one for the best workout, I would think.

Okay, anything other than hula hoops?  I think it looks like fun, and I can easily see what a good workout it would be, but since I do not possess the coordination required to hula hoop, my guess is that I won't have much luck with this workout  :(

Even as a child I couldn't do more than one or two spins before the hoop would fall off.  However, if you all think that's the best route to go, maybe I'll go to Target or Walmart tonight and use a regular hula hoop in the store to see if I can finally figure out how to do it, and if so I'll think about purchasing a sport hoop...

But yeah, if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them!!!!

Isn't there hula hooping on your WII fit?  I just learned about it's existance an hour ago from a co-worker - how's that for cosmic alignment? :D

Goblyn,

When you where thin did you have those sides handles?

For myself, I have been always more or less heavy and those hips handles are not very accentuated on my body but they surely are more noticeable when I gain weight. I don't have a lot of fat around there and I didn't either had to do anykind of exercise for that. My body shape is just not giving me those handles.. But maybe, only maybe if you do exercise, you might fix it a little or a lot.

Clarinette:  When I was "thinner" I'm talking about still being around 30-40lbs overweight, so yes, I did indeed have love handles, they were a bit smaller than they are now, but they were still there, and at the time one of the few places I had really obvious weight.

Shovelqueen:  I do the hula hoop exercise on the Wii Fit, and it kills me!  LOL.  It is a good workout, but you don't actually use hoops, you are just making circles with your hips, it seems more like an aerobic activity than a specific target toning exercise to me.  Maybe I'll just have to start doing the wii fit hula hoops more often!

Hey Goblyn!

Okay. Go get a weighted hoop! Swear to goddess you willl be able to do it. I have become more coordinated in my old age but Really I could not hoop worth a damn with those light kid things back in 1975.

It without a doubt is firming my mid section and I was already pretty strong there to start.

YOU CAN DO IT!!

stepping down of the box now....................

I am the biggest klutz in the world, but the weighted hoops actually make it easier to keep them going.  The size and weight helps keep the momentum going.  I have lost not only my love handles, but my bra bulge and muffin top too.  I lost 2 inches off my waist after the first 2 months of hooping.

This was a big problem for me.   The good news is, winning the fat loss game is the best that you can do ... doing more work on that area will not help.

the muscles under there are called the "external obliques"
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=+%22external+obliques%22&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

Spot reduction does not work to burn fat above a muscle.   Does.  Not.  Work.

Ever see a Tour de France competitor?  They use their legs 1,000 times more than their arms, but their arms look as fat-free as their legs.

Spot reduction does not work.  Does.  Not.  Work.

Ever read the idea that women should work their chest muscles to make the breasts look bigger ?

Same thing applies here.  If you exercise those external obliques they'll get BIGGER.  They will push out the fat more.  I did this in my teenage years.  Lots of side bends with dumbbells.   They made my love handles look bigger.

Under the external obliques are the internal obliques.  If you exercise those, they'll get BIGGER.
under those are the Transversus abdominis - If you exercise those, they'll get BIGGER.
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=%22transversus+abdominis%22&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

Simply losing the fat is the best that you can do.  In fact, putting less work on those  muscles (doing less abdominal exercise)  may shrink them a bit, which is probably what you want.

What might help is if you do pushups and chinups to make your chest  bigger and make the handles look smaller in comparison

Also, squats may help -  bigger glutes may help the handles look less big

The other suggestion about hula hoops could work for you ... I can imagine that would work out a lot of the muscles that attach below the hip joints - quads, hamstrings, glutes, hip adductors and abductors.

The main thing about the hula from my perspective - it could use a lot of muscle, it moves your whole body, and you might be able to do it in such a way that it won't make the wrong muscles grow.

A little information I just came across

That is, the hour someone might spend engaged in exercise is still pretty small compared to what’s happening the other 23 hours of the day.  And, as many have found out by using tools such as the Bodybugg/GoWear Fit, small changes during the majority of the day (e.g. getting up every so often during the day to walk around at work for 8 hours) end up having a far larger impact on daily energy expenditure compared to the hour of exercise they might do.  As many have also found, being very inactive for those same 8 hours (e.g. jockeying a computer desk) doesn’t burn many more calories than laying in bed.

How about dancing.....if your partner isn't keen on the idea...maybe zumba or line dancing may work for you....There might be a class or two offered in your area.....

May be you should try side-planks along with regualr planks.
