I have pretty much lost my back fat and "bra bulge", not to mention the dreaded "muffin top".  My husband told me that my back is looking a lot different.

For ages I ignored this thread thinking something in the vein of "what on earth could be interesting about hula hoops??". Then on a whim I clicked in, and read the whole thread.... and went straight to order my hula hoop.

That was two days ago.

Today, my hoop arrived, and it is downright FUN!

I seem to have gotten the hang of it, sort of - I can hoop for a couple of minutes straight. I'm trying to follow the instructions that say to only do 1 - 3 minutes a day the first week. It's tough, though, because I just want to go out and hoop some more!

Thank you so much, terio, for posting this here!

Oh jeez.... I'm so frustrated... I made no progress with the hoop... oh well, I have to look for a larger hoop, no more question about that...

I woke up to my first hooping bruise this morning, right over the bony tip of my left hip bone.  But I really think it is related to hooping wearing a pair of jeans, rather than softer pants.  I could feel the waistband and the beltloops as the heavy wavy hoop was passing over them if it dropped low enough.  I think I'll just tough it out and toughen up, though, because the best part of this is that I can just pick it up anytime.  No getting changed, no special shoes...  Yesterday, I hooped 10 min waiting for the oven to heat up, then another 10 min waiting for the fish too cook, then the third 10 min after checking on the fish.  Half an hour of ab exercise completed, while making dinner!!  (It helped that I was home alone, a rare occurance for me)

BJane welcome to the hooping addiction.  It's so great to have exercise that is fun and that you look forward to doing.

I was wondering if it's possible to remove one of the pieces from the sports hoop that you all are using, giving you the option of also using a smaller hoop.  One hoop that I looked into buying was designed to be used that way.  I've been using hoops that have a 35-37 inch diameter.  With a small weighted hoop I can get it going really fast.  This also gives some aerobic exercise.  I've been wanting my hoops smaller and heavier.  Looks like I might be making some more.

I can now hoop indefinitely in either direction.  In fact, I'm slightly preferring the direction that initially was harder for me.  Yesterday I was more self conscious around hooping outside, because I've been doing it so much.

SQ, if you continue to have bruising problems I'd recommend getting a hoop that isn't wavy.  I hoop with all different kinds of clothes and haven't had any bruising problems.

Heidi, I recently read of a good idea for giving hoops more weight - adding heavy wire, like telephone wire inside the hoop.

You can't remove a section of the hoop - it is too stiff, so the radius of curvature of each of the pieces is VERY fixed.

I can't believe how much fun this is!

Terio - if I'm reading this right, you've only been hooping for 2 months.

There is no emoticon that expresses shock-amazement-awe to my satisfaction.... but this comes pretty close:

terio, I'd thought of heavy wire but haven't tried it yet.  I have a kid's hoop that comes apart in pieces.  I'd like to try it for that one.

Thanks BJane for answering about removing a section.  That's too bad that you can't make it smaller, because it would make the hoop much more versatile.

Yesterday I wrapped my bean filled heavy hoop with inner tube rubber.  But it feels like it might be too heavy.  I'll live with it for awhile before unwrapping it.  Unwrapping will be fast and easy in comparison.

Today I finally had a break through with hooping around my hips.  I was using a light hoop and I couldn't do it at all.  The hoop would drop after a handful of revolutions.  Then all of a sudden something clicked and I could do it!  I love when that happens.  With the heavy hoop, I'd been able to lower it a few inches to my belly button but no further.  Once I get better at hip hooping with a light weight hoop, I'll try it with the heavier ones.  I'm hoping that hip hooping will help tone the lower parts.  All my excess fat is lower down.

Last night I read up on hip hooping at http://hooping.tribe.net  It's a great forum for learning hooping moves or questions around making hoops.  However most of the folks there are just into hoop dancing, though some are into hooping with heavier hoops, too.  But a few people there were judgemental toward the exercise hoops.

Here is the thread on hip hooping:

Here's a good thread on moves for beginners:

Here's a thread on things to do with your arms while hooping:

And here's the thread where a few folks criticized the sports hoops:

Terio, I was thinking it would be great if you were inspired to post your results on that thread.

It's been very interesting to read through this thread! One of the things I love about SLDers is your openness to new ideas, your sense of adventure in trying them out, and your honest assessment of the results. When you say something works, I trust it, because I know you also say when it doesn't.

I'm going out of town May 1-12 (some work, some personal travel), but I'm going to buy a hoop when I get home!

I'm still hooping daily and still loving it.  It's so great to really enjoy and find pleasure in exercise.  I thought that my core muscles were pretty well developed from T-Tapp and pilates, but the hooping is developing my core on a much deeper level.  It feels powerful.  I'd like to do some T-Tapp moves while hooping.

I've been able to move around a lot more when I hoop.  So I'm getting a decent aerobic workout as well.  I worked a lot on shifting my weight from one leg to another.  Now I am able to hoop one-legged for a short time.  Mostly I hoop to music and move back and forth, side to side, and turning around.  I also do squats and a few jumps.  I can hoop around my hips in one direction but not so well the other way yet.  I practice everything both ways.  I can hip hoop with a heavier hoop now, but I've gotten bruises on my hip bones from it.

Learning new moves takes a lot of patience.  I'm trying to learn chest hooping and thigh/knee hooping.  Progress is incredibly slow and I spend a lot of time picking the hoop up off the ground.  So far I'm really motivated, though.  I use a light weight hoop and a child's size hoop for learning the new moves.  I'd really injure myself with a heavier hoop.  I can hoop with my arms inside the hoop for a short time.

My 2 pound rubber wrapped hoops are my favorites.  But I also do a bit of hooping with heavier 3-5 pound hoops.  After using a heavy hoop the lighter ones feel like nothing.

My husband still loves the hooping but hasn't had much time for it.  Occasionally I bring hoops to one of his bee yards.  I hoop while he tends the bees.  Then he hoops with me for a bit.

i glad you're still having fun with your hoops heidi.  i have had no luck with my homemade one.  the local sports shops don't stock adult hoops just small ones for kids.
the cheapest one (10$) on one of the sites you posted would cost 50$ including shipping and handling.    money i can't spare at the mo.
so i've been looking at sites in the uk.  but i've been a bit off track this week with school meetings, public holiday,  sports day,  and now my eldest ds's birthday....

All of your enthusiasm is inspirational!  I was wondering if Heidi or anyone else has gotten good visible results with the hoop, besides Terio's awesome results, of course!  And is there anyone with results in which hooping was the only exercise you were doing?  I think I'm going to start with my DD's hoop and then make or order one very soon. It's motivation enough to think of stronger, leaner abs, but also losing back fat and bra bulge?  That's the clincher!
