I need to learn how to hoop with my feet closer together. My left knee is starting to bug me, especially when I hoop. I've laid off for a few days, hoping it will improve. No luck so far.

T-Vix
Definitely a lighter weight hoop helped me to learn how to hoop better so that I didn't have injury.  The light weight hoops are harder to learn on but they don't stress your body and force you to hoop better.  They are also inexpensive to buy and more available.

I've been nervous about the repetitive motion aggravating alignment issues.  So I've been building up very gradually.  I now love the heavier hoop.  I had a breakthrough last night where the heavy hoop felt effortless and like it weighed nothing at all.

m.c. -- you are lucky and talented to be so coordinated.  I'm hooping for longer periods of time.  But much of my exercise still comes from picking the hoop up off of the ground every minute or two.  :D

 :D

i really must go to the ironmonger and try and buy a suitable pipe to make a hoop.  the ones online are soooo expensive esp when i have to include a lot of money for postage!.  the hoops here are only the light kids ones and i haven't seen any of those either!!

hey i can go now!!!

hmmm as usual our local ironmonger didn't have what i wanted.  no 3/4in pipe (it had finished...sigh)  so i got the next size which is quite narrow  :x  and light  :x.
also the thing to join with  was a big hefty thing that would surely make the hoop fall.  so i got a bit of narrow pipe thing but its too wide for my actual pipe so i just may use tape and tape it together like that...
well must go and prepare lunch and then i will see what i can do....

nougat, just keep messing around with it and you'll get something to work.  You can wrap a lot of cloth and tape around it to fatten it up and make it heavier and/or fill it with something.

Here are links to inspirational hooping videos in case anyone is inspired to move beyond waist hooping.

Also, here is a place where you can buy a lighter weight hoop:
http://www.troohoops.com/
What I like about them is that you can buy a blank hoop relatively inexpensively and tape it up yourself:
http://www.troohoops.com/products/do_it_yourself.php
(I haven't order hoops from them so I can't vouch for the quality.  But a long time ago I used their juggling clubs which are excellent.)

I'm making some really small light weight hoops so that I can do some arm hooping without beating them up.  I bruise really easily.  I also want to make hoops that are different weights.  There was a hoop online that I really wanted to get (Gaiam Dance Hoop) but it's been discontinued.

I love the more centered feeling that I have in my body from hooping.  I think that my mid section is looking ever so slightly more toned.

thanks heidi i will look at your links in a mo.

well.
my hoop did not turn out too well.  as it was light i sort of filled it with water. taped it and taped the extra pipe bit thing over the lot.  well the hoop loses its shape when i use it.  and the tape is already very worn from falling on a rough concrete floor.  the only place i can use it is outside on the roof.

i think it may be a bit big for me (a 10ft pipe)  and at best i did 6 turns from waist to floor.....

now let me see what heidi has shown me - thanks  :)

Finally found a hoop at a sporting goods store, labelled hoop for gymnastics... 5.90 euros. It's smaller than yours (80 cm) and not too heavy. I just cannot do it... it rotates 3 times and falls. When it falls it hurts my legs and feet. But I sweat a lot in the process so it's gotta do something...
My daughter has no trouble doing it, she controls it very well. So it's not the size. It's me, I'm a klutz!

Maybe it's the shape of you, not the klutziness.  If your tummy protrudes and is a fuller part of you than your hips, you may be extra challenged by trying to keep the hoop on the biggest part, rather than the smallest part (waist) like those of us with hefty hips and a smaller waist.

You're not a klutz, my dear, just an apple!

Pinkmug, the secret (for me at least) is the heavier, larger hoop.  I absolutely cannot keep one of the smaller lightweight ones going.  Have you googled "exercise hoop"?  Maybe there is a European ebay or Amazon seller for these.

OK nougat, you're going to have to explain how you have a sore elbow from hooping!  I can't quite figure that one out.

So I have a question for my fellow hoopers:  What kind of motion does your lower body do when you hoop?  Is it circular, or rocking front to back?  The reason I ask is that I'm trying to diagnose what the issue with my knees is.  I notice that my motion is more back and forth than circling the hips.  Maybe this is contributing to the knee pain.

Mom,
When I used to try hooping in PE the motion we were taught was to rotate our hips in a circle, not back and forth. I'll bet that's partially why your knees are sore. Also try using your hips and butt more. Hopefully that helps, but if not maybe we can figure it out if you visit this weekend ;).

Pinkmug and nougat, I couldn't hoop at all to begin with.  I just kept practicing several times a day and little by little I was able to keep the hoop up longer.  When I started I had one foot in front of the other and did a very exaggerated back and forth movement.  My husband didn't have the heart to tell me that I looked like a total dork.  So instead he video taped me so I could see for myself.  I am able to hoop upright now and hopefully look a little less dorky.  But I don't care too much about how I look because it's so much fun.

Sorry to be offering a countering opinion Chrissy, but the hooping instructions that I read and watched suggested that people either hoop with a forward and back motion (rockers) or a side to side motion (wigglers).  I do the former, but occasionally I try to do a side to side or circular motion.

T-Vix, I had ankle pain until I got better at it.  I initially did really short sessions so that I didn't aggravate it.  Being able to stand upright instead of squatting low made a big difference.  My neighbor is just learning and she is squatting low, too.

It's well worth sticking with it.  It's a great feeling once you finally get it.  I finally can sustain it long enough that my abs feel tired before the hoop drops.  I also made some small hoops for my arms.  I use them outside -- it's too dangerous when they fly off in the house.

I have a heavy 4+ pound hoop covered with yarn that I use inside.  A 3 pound hoop with nothing wrapped around it for outside.  And lots of light weight hoops that I use when I'm trying to learn something new so that I don't injure myself.  I'm trying to learn how to hoop with one arm down inside the hoop.  Eventually I want to be able to hoop up and down my body, not just around my waist.  I'm using a light child's hoop for around my neck and chest.  But so far I can't do it yet.

I've got a couple of friends that just got hoops that haven't been able to figure it out yet either.  I tell them that it's like waterskiing or riding a bicycle.  At first you try too hard and can't do it, but then suddenly you get it and it feels so natural.  I did spend plenty of time moving my hips in an exaggerated fashion and picking the hoop up off the ground.  I was also totally out of breath after a minute or so.  Now I can hoop for half an hour or more and barely break a sweat.   So all I can say is, keep trying - you will get it.

I would love to learn how to do tricks, like hoop up and down my body and over my arms, but I think that I will need a different kind of hoop for that.

I do wear some light wrist weights now while I hoop, I don't do anything fancy with my arms, I'm too uncoordinated, but since my arms are kind up raised up I feel that it helps.
