Today i did not feel hungry at all. It was 2pm when I realized that I had not eaten anything all day. But I did not feel hungry. I knew I had to eat though, so I went to the vending machine and got a small packet of cheese-its. I couldnt even finish it...--babyphat

5 weeks and no weight loss
« on: August 18, 2008, 08:43:43 pm »

Hi all!
So some quick info:

I started the diet 5 weeks ago at 164 pounds (goal weight 125) and was basically doing no exercise. My usual food intake averaged out at about 1800 calories. I've been using walnut oil instead of ELOO.
Starting around week 2, I started doing some light exercise for about 45 min 3 times a week. Now, the oil had no effect on me whatsoever until about week 3/4ish when I noticed a sudden suppression in appetite. Even after two weeks of getting full super-easily (my calorie intake has sunk to about 1100 a day) I haven't lost any weight. In fact, weighing myself a couple minutes ago, I now weigh 168.

This is my usual food intake for the day now...
Breakfast: Bowl of frosted mini wheats with 1% milk
Lunch: turkey subway sandwich or a lean cuisine
Dinner: some sort of home cooked meal (beef stew, spaghetti, chili...) that I try to portion control to about 500 or less calories.

So... several questions.
1. I've heard that its good to weigh yourself at a certain time of the day (or during a certain time during your daily routine) as this is your "true weight" for the day. When is this??
2.  I'M SO DISCOURAGED! What do you guys do to keep you going when you're in a slump like this?
3. Should I be upping my exercise?

Any motivational tips would be great! Thanks!

Hey Stumbeline--

oh I hear you!  We all get stuck (or most of us) and discouraged at times but it really does work, you just need patience and tweaking.

Re. when to weigh: Definitely pick ONE TIME and stick to it.  Best is first thing in the morning after emptying your bladder, naked, before you've had any food or water.
That's the time least affected by whatever you just did/ ate/ etc.  Weight fluctuates A LOT on a daily basis.  See The Hackers' Diet online for a great description of the daily fluctuations.  Don't get depressed about when to weigh.

Secondly, you've already made some great changes, and it's good that AS has kicked in.  It takes some of us a while to experience it (sometimes weeks) so you are not alone.
it also depends on whether you've recently lost any weight BEFORE starting SLD.  Remember, AS is a side-effect of your set-point lowering, and if your set point is already below your current weight you'll feel hungry til it catches up.  But it will if you keep doing the oil!

As for 1800 cals/ day: I don't know your size and activity level, but I would not be losing weight on that intake.  Most women (don't know about the guys) need to eat less than 1500 cals/ day to lose weight unless you're hugely active and big.

It sounds like you're doing everything right, and now AS is working I'd suggest lowering your calories to 1500 or below.  Sites like fitday.com and sparkpeople.com and calorie-count.com are great for doing that-- portions really matter too!

One more thing: when i started exercising a lot, I lost not an ounce for four weeks!  But I've been persuaded by knowledgeable people (and books) that the body makes muscle and retains water when you start upping the exercise-- and these things weigh more than fat... in fact you might be losing fat but not pounds because you're growing muscle, storing glycogen & water... For me, after 4 weeks, things began to move.

good luck and don't give up!  Check out the Tips and Innovations thread too, lots of great "extra credit" ideas there like nose-clipping meals

stumbleine,

Have you lost inches off your abdomen or other body parts, since you started SLD? If you have lost inches, then your body is getting into shape with SLD. Many people often experience only inch loss without weight loss in the beginning. After a couple of months, both inch loss and weight loss occur.

I don't exercise, so I don't know how the following tips will affect it (I suspect it might make the exercise difficult), but I've had plateaus and hiccups, where for 1-2 weeks I lose nothing, and even gain. I also sometimes gorge (particularly during holidays or family outings), so what I do after is:

Fast - I take vitamins and plenty of water, but for the entire day, I only take two servings of ELOO/SW/CO (whatever I'm currently using) - I normally take 3 tablespoons of CO these days, for example, so for a fasting day I take 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon/night. I sometimes add a bowl of cereal somewhere in there if my mouth feels lonely, or munch on peanuts.

This always results in a boost in weight loss - maybe it's only liquid, muscle, or whatever I ate the day before - but it helps get me back on track, and the AS is very strong the next day, so I eat less then too. It especially helps with plateaus.

You could try something less radical - taking one meal, with the ELOO at the other end of the day. If this is too hard at first, try upping the dosage a tablespoon. Properly done (as Seth points out in his book), you should have absolutely no need for food, only perhaps cravings, so if you've found the proper dosage (which varies person to person), this semi-extreme diet, at least for a couple of days, shouldn't be hard to achieve.
