I came across SLD last weekend on the Freakonomics site. I decided to try it and WOW. I have never known anything like the AS effect I get from 2 x 20ml canola oil (known as rapeseed oil in the UK). I've tried various prescription drugs and non-prescription supplements for AS in the past - nothing comes close to this. I can turn down junk food even when it's literally handed to me on a plate - for me that is HUGE. -- sld uk

feeling sick . .how long does this last ?
« on: December 30, 2008, 07:58:42 pm »

Hello out there in Shangrila land ..  . just 2 days with 2 tb. of flax oil (one in early morning one before bedtime).  At night difficult to sleep . . feel like I want to . .puke  . .but make it through the night (sleep problems anyway). . . is this "normal" ?

I've read about feeling "sick" on the blogs here, but no mention of throwing up.  I think the oil is hard (tough) on my stomach.

Also, 1 tb of flax seed oil = 11 grams of fat  ( x 2 !!)   that's ALOT.  I'm going to give it a few more days and see what happens.  Also, due to work during day hours (out and about) I was thinking of breaking open a fish oil capsule and counting that as a tb of oil during the day.   I've read others use more than one type of oil while on this food plan.
Many thanks for any counsel .  .. . . and HaPPY  NEW YEAR !!!

Paula, you may need to try a different oil. Not everyone can tolerate flax. And even if you can, you'll need to build up the enzymes in your system. Many of us use enzymes to help digest the oil. You can buy them at any health food store, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or even places like Walmart. I'd say try the enzymes first. If you still have issues, switch oils.

One of the truisms of SLD is that it works differently for everyone. Most of us have experimented quite a bit to find what works. And honestly, 2 days is nothing.

As far as the amount of fat, it's a sad and clinging myth that fat consumption is bad or, well...fattening! In fact, eating the right fats can help you loose weight. In many, many ways. Flax is definitely a good fat. And so are many others. Continue milling around the forum. You'll see a variety of fats that people use. Personally, I use a combination of virgin coconut oil and dairy cream.

Hang in there. Once you fin what works for you, this technique can be beyond liberating.

Good luck!

Hi paulasb,

~Outy is right about trying another oil.
There are some statistics about oils and problems. I don´t know where I saw it. I think the least people had problems with ELOO.
Trying the flex-seed another few days might also work.
Just try out what you feel is OK for you.
I felt sick with canola oil. But as it is so healthy I didn´t want to change. The problem was gone after 1 or 2 days without changing the dose (2 tbsp at that time).
Meanwhile I take the full daily amount in 1 dose (3 tbsp) without problems.
I guess if I would have started with 3 tbsp at once I would have felt sick all day.

Welcome, Paula!

Just a note that 1 fish oil capsule is 1000mg or 1 gram of fat.  So it takes about 14 of them to replace 1 tbsp of oil.  They can be a great convenience, but also very expensive.  I'm out all day, and I carry oil in a wee little Tupperware container (called a Mini), wrapped in a tissue in a ziplock bag.  The Mini never leaks, but the tissue absorbs the tiny bit of oil that ends up on the outside when you remove and replace the lid.  That way the baggie can be reused for days.  I carry a water bottle, and just throw the oil down like a shot when I have a moment's privacy.

Others have suggested the sample or travel-sized Listerine bottles as perfect for carrying oil, and the lid can be used as a measuring shotglass.  Again, though, carry it in something else to absorb the oily drips that result from taking your dose.

Like Outy said, it's a process of finding the implementation practices that work for you.  Good luck!

It took me about a week to stop feeling queasy the first time, now I taper on and off the oil.  I use fish oil capsules, I buy them on sale and try to keep them in the fridge or freezer.  I sometimes nose clip to swallow.   It is the most expensive choice but it is handy.
