Apple Cider Vinegar
« on: November 18, 2008, 03:43:00 pm »

Well, since starting to drink ACV every day, my weight has dipped again, after a loooong plateau. (seemed like years..  )

I went to the Bragg's website, and looked around.  I also signed up for some free samples, which came today.  8)  I LOVE free samples.  8) and you know who you are...

Since everyone seems to be asking/talking about ACV, I thought I would post some of their literature that came with the free sample.  I don't know how much of it is true, nor do I necessarily believe everything they say about it, because of course, they are trying to sell the ACV, but I figured maybe one central place to talk about it might be a good thing.  8)
I actually endorse buying the cheapest kind you can find that has the mother in it.  The store by me sells it for $4 and change for a quart and up, or $18 a gallon.
Claims They Make
1.helps maintain a youthful body
2.helps fight germs and bacteria, naturally
3.helps retard the onset of old age in humans and animals
4.helps clean out arterial plaque
5.helps regulate calcium metabolism
6.helps keep blood the right consistency
7.helps with menses and relieves PMS
8.helps normalize urine PH, thus relieving UTI
9.helps digestion, assmilation, and PH balance
10.helps relieve sore throats, laryngitis, cleans out toxins
11.helps sinus, asthma, and flu sufferers breathe more easily
12.helps maintain healthy skin, soothes a sunburn
13.helps prevent itchy scalp, dry hair, banishes dandruff
14.helps fight arthritis, and removes toxins and crystals from joints, tissues, and organs
15. helps control and normalize weight  this claim is my personal favorite!   8)

Some of these uses must be topical, I have heard of putting vinegar on a sunburn before.

To get the benefits of drinking ACV, you have to have the kind with the mother in it, which is the sediment on the bottom of the bottle.  The regular, pastuerized, filtered kind with no mother isn't supposed to do a thing for you except be flavorful.

The recipe they have is as follows:
drink 3X a day
1-2 tsp apple cider vinegar
1-2 tsp raw honey
8oz water

I put mine in iced tea.  This is 1oz of ACV per quart of tea.  1oz = 2TBS
1/2c ACV
1 gallon of iced tea
1 tub of Crystal Light, I like the grapefruit flavor best

thanks Karky :D

Their recommended dose, added up, equals 2 tablespoons a day ( = 1 ounce a day or 1/8 cup a day).

I should try it on my dandruff. Or start drinking oil again, it seems like my scalp has gotten really dry recently. Hmm...

I am getting more than their recomended dose, just fairly diluted in my tea.
Sunday I am amazed to say, I drank an entire gallon of tea by myself.
I was thirsty I guess

I've been using it as a skin tonic for years. A tiny bit mixed with mineral water. I believe I posted it on my beauty blog, otherwise known as my SLD journal. One thing I find perplexing is how taking the capsules could have any of the purported benefits. I can't imagine the mother keeps well dehydrated in a pill.

Karky, we want to know where to get the samples! Okay, well I do.  :D

Is this the same company that makes the "liquid aminos" stuff"? I use that instead of soy sauce. My kids don't know the difference and it has much less salt than soy sauce or tamari. I didn't know they also made ACV. I'll have to check that out.

Anyway, I just poked around on the website, and it is the same company--the samples are here:

Bragg's Liquid Aminos is (are?) a lot like soy sauce. I know they claim that it has a lot less sodium, but I did a comparison last time I was at the grocery store and it's about the same amount of sodium by liquid volume. On the soy sauce, it allows a tablespoon serving or something, but on the Bragg's, the 'serving size' is just a half-teaspoon or so. [Edit: see below] Still, it's tasty :)

And yep, Bragg's also makes the ACV.

Kikkoman Soy Sauce
Serving size: 1 tbsp.
Sodium: 920 mg

Bragg's Liquid Aminos
Serving size: 1/2 tsp. (1/2 tsp. X 6 = 1 tbsp.)
Sodium: 150 mg (150 mg X 6 = 900 mg)

D'oh! I wonder if we're using less Bragg's than soy sauce for less sodium intake overall, at least? It has a stronger flavor, I think. Probably not much less, if any.

However, it has the cute lady with the flowery hat on the bottle, which makes it all worthwhile. :) Kind of like the Dr. Bronner's bottle with all his religious ideas on there. I tried to read the whole thing once and didn't make it past the top half.

The brand I have at the moment is called Tree of Life.

The literature that came with the Braggs free samples was all religious and raw foodie, and how shoes and bras cut off your blood flow, so you shouldn't wear them.
There is no way I am going anywhere without my Over-the-Shoulder-Boulder-Holder.
Seriously, without support, they hurt.

I got some Bragg's ACV. How are you taking it, karky? Just plain in tea, or do you sweeten it at all?

I tried it the first time in plain water and nearly retched near the end of the glass. The next time I mixed in some honey and it was downright tolerable. I use honey that a family member makes so it's raw and unfiltered, but it's not exactly calorie free. But I need something to help get me through the evenings. I tend to get hungry around 9pm-midnight. Going to bed earlier is not an option as I usually work for a few hours after the kids are in bed.

What I don't understand: supposedly, it helps promote an alkaline body PH? How does that work when vinegar is acidic?

I have a gallon sized pitcher that I brew regular iced tea in, then I add 1 tub of Crystal Light any flavor, although I prefer the grapefruit flavor, then I add 1/2-3/4 cup of ACV which I have shaken in the bottle to stir up the mother, then I finish filling the pitcher with water.  I usually drink it all day long.

My mom makes her iced tea by the glass, she uses Lipton Sugar Free Peach flavored instant iced tea, to which she adds a couple of tablespoons of ACV to each glass.

I'm starting to really like my ACV (2 tbsp in 10 oz water)... I've started having it in the evening, it feels kind of like having a nice glass of wine (with some imagination) and I tend to drink it slowly and don't feel like eating with it, so it replaces an evening snack sometimes. Sometimes I microwave it with some cinnamon, then it's kind of like hot spiced cider. With some imagination.

Sometimes when I drink ACV in water warm as a tea I add stevia to it to sweeten and it really is like hot apple cider.
Now I'll be adding cinnamon too. Bonus. :)

Thanks VeganKitten and m.c. for the tip on ACV tea.  I've been drinking ACV in hot water with stevia and cinnamon and it's surprisingly delicious.  I hadn't been taking ACV because it didn't taste good the other ways I tried it.  But I really like it this way.

It's nice to have a new winter drink as I bundle up in preparation for the next two snow storms.  Lots of people near me got decimated by the recent ice storm.  Sure was beautiful, though.  I'm glad I didn't lose power.  What a winter and it's still only December!

Edit: I've been making the tea with just a splash of ACV -- maybe a teaspoon.  I'm not sure how some folks can handle 2 tablespoons at once.  It's so sour.

It grows on you.
When I started adding it to my tea, it was very sour, now I hardly notice.

And what Heidi said about the storms.
There are more on the way tomorrow, supposed to slam Chicago, or so I hear.  I hope Jas makes it thru with her electricity intact.
And the worst of winter is always in February,
I can hardly wait....

Hello Karky,
I hope you are doing well today. I am still suffering from too many cravings and overeating so I am thinking to go buy some ACV today since they do sell it here, hopefully it has the mother in it, I will see before i buy. My question is when do you take the ACV before, during or after eating or in between like the oil or does it not matter.
Thanks again for your or anyone else might know's help
