Another good Omega-3 source: Sacha Inchi Oil
« on: April 24, 2008, 02:50:12 PM »

My mother occasionally makes some random purchase when she goes to
a health food store, and today she picked up a bottle of oil called sacha
inchi oil. Apparently, it comes from the Inca peanut and grows in the Peruvian
Amazon.

This is the Inca peanut. The seeds, from which the oils are extracted, grow
inside the fruit capsules and are said to contain from 49% to 54% in oils.
These seeds are about 35% skin/peal, and 65% peanut.

Its known concentration of Omega 3 is on average 48% while the concentration
of Omega 6 is on average 35%. I don't think, however, it is the best source of
vegetable Omega-3 source since Flax seed oil is known to have an average of 58%
of Omega 3 and have lower Omega-6 concentration of 14%.

What interested me is that this oil is known to have long durability more than
any other type of Omega-3 oil in the market, which also means that you don't
have to put it in the refrigerator like you would do with flaxseed oil.
Further more it will not lose its flavor with heat cooking too.

But the best part is yet to come (Drumroll please.)
It won high reputation for its flavor especially in Europe. It has even won the gold
medal in the contest which was held in Paris in 2004 and 2006.

I haven't developed a taste for EVOO so I might as well try this in my salad.
Hope it is as delicious as it claims to be :D

What a beautiful plant!  Let us know how it tastes.  I'll look for it around here. I like trying new healthy foods.
