People who stand at work
« on: September 26, 2007, 09:25:39 AM »

This question may have been asked before (and if so I apologise), but has anyone investigated the sleep patterns of people who stand or walk as part of their jobs? It might be interesting to compare those who stand but are otherwise inactive (e.g., cashiers) with those who spend a lot of time walking (e.g. mailmen) and those who do quite stenuous work (e.g., tree-planters).

Cheers,

Chris

I was a hairdresser for 15 years (20+ years ago) and never had any trouble sleeping.  More sedentary now and major sleep issues, however....I have sleep apnea which is aggravated by my excess weight, I had way less excess weight when I was a hairdresser.  Also, I am now going through menopause, which in my case is causing night sweats, again not something I was dealing with when I was a hairdresser.  So I have a few confounding issues.  But I have considered putting my keyboard on a pedestal so I could stand while I work.

People who stand at work and do more of physical tasks are said to gone to sleep faster, deeply and longer than those inactive workers. You can notice that by just comparing different employees.
