After a lifetime of not weighing what I wanted, the idea that I can choose my weight is a stupendous dream for my mind to grasp. All along I've been hopeful, but not daring to believe in it, until it becomes real and lasting.  But now I live with feeling happiness with my body, and that feeling is a priceless gift. -- Heidi 555

based on what I am reading, many people seem to have a bounce up in weight just before a big drop--I know the bcp's may also cause a bounce up, but you may just need to hang in there and see what happens

I've been getting that the longer I'm in the diet.  It is disconcerting, I'm glad for things like belts and clothes that reflect real size.

Sadly, whether it's fat or just water, the clothes are definitely back to the snug fit of before.  Gaaah! It's so frustrating!

My massive water retention from the birth control pills seems to have stabilized at about 5 pounds.  I have one of those scales that claims to measure body fat, and even though it's wildly inaccurate (it fluctuates constatly by 3 or 4 percentage points, rendering it pretty much useless), it's registered a difference.  So instead of being 136 pounds and 26-29% fat, which is what it was saying before, now I'm 141 pounds and 22-25% fat.  @$%&* water!  Unfortunately, my body looks and clothes fit the same whether it's fat or water, so it doesn't make me feel much better.

I was off the oil for a few days, and was considering giving up altogether.  But last night I ran about 5 miles, got home and was feeling really proud of myself, and then devoured about 500 calories worth of leftovers before bed.  I really want to give SLD another chance, since it was working before I added the factors of hormones and nt smoking.  So I'm upping my oil intake to 1.5 T twice a day, and I'm going to eat really minimally today (baby carrots and cottage cheese) to kick-start things.  Someone mentioned that they had better results with a longer no-taste window, so I'm going to try to keep my window to a least three hours instead of two and see how that works.

I'm praying for a whoosh here!

That is another true point that probably needs to get added on the FAQ page some time.

As you can see from the thread title.... as of this morning I weigh 2 pounds MORE than when I started this diet a week ago!  I was losing and feeling really psyched about it, and then in the last two days I've ballooned.  First day it definitely wasn't my fault, but last night I went out with a friend for a few drinks (ok, a lot of drinks) and dinner and dessert.  I'm estimating my calorie intake yesterday was just under 2500 calories, which is too much at my weight, but not by that much - especially considering that it's not like I've been starving myself, I'm totally bewildered about why I would magically gain 4 pounds.   Especially since alcohol usually dehydrates me, making me weigh less the next day.

I knew that starting birth control would make me gain some water weight, but this is ridiculous.  I don't have the appetite supression I saw in the first few days either.  I'm going to start skipping breakfast and taking the oil in the morning to see if that has a more noticeable effect.

A couple-three notes.

A number of people have noticed that alcohol intake seems to derail the effects of the diet.  I don't drink, so I can only comment from other people's posts.

Also, a lot of people on the diet end up with only two meals a day or two snacks and one meal.  I'm not sure what to really make of that, but I thought I'd note it.  The real key is to make sure you are getting enough nutrition, not that you get it spread over three meals.

Finally, the longer the no-flavor window, the more effect it seems to have.

Keep posting.

I think alcohol derails a lot of diets, what with the late-night pizza cravings it causes.  Wednesday was the only time I've gone out drinking since starting the diet, bt I'll keep an eye on that in the future and see if I notice a consistent difference.

The one or two meal a day thing... Fine on weekends when I sleep in past breakfast, but there's no way, just no way, I can get by on less than three small meals a day during the work week.  Even my first week of SLD, when I was losing weight, my stomach would be growling come mealtime.  I work out a fair amount and I know that some people have speculated that it will keep the diet from working so well, but I'm not going to STOP working out to better pursue a diet - that would just be silly.

I was back on the oil today and instantly noticed that I got full faster, but I was still munching throughout the day.  Not needing to eat sure didn't keep me from wanting to eat.  I kept it pretty healthy though, although I didn't count calories or weigh myself today (too depressing after seeing those pretty low numbers last week!)

I'm FINALLY back to where I was in the beginning - half a pound under, in fact! Yay!!!

It seems like I've been eating like a beast, although I know that isn't the case.  So it's hard at the end of the day, when I feel like I've already eaten too many calories to lose weight, to choke down a tbsp of oil.  Now that I've reached the point where I always find it really hard to lose weight naturally, I'm going to give this diet another week or two and see if I can duplicate the sucess I had before.

Started my morning on the wrong foot by eating a breakfast sandwich that turned out to be 500+ calories when I looked it up online... But I brought a small, healthy lunch to work with me and will NOT go out for a snack.  Maybe a diet soda.

After 17 days, I give up!
« Reply #22 on: June 10, 2006, 09:39:25 am »

Today I weighed in at 134.8 pounds.  Which is the lowest I've been in ages.  But it's also a dramatic drop that happened after I STOPPED drinking oil.  Yesterday I went shopping, ate ice cream, drank beer, and worked out a lot, and it was so, so nice to be able to pop a piece of gum into my mouth without stressing about flavor/calorie associations and eat when I wanted to, as opposed to when I was allowed to.  I know that a lot of people here have had really amazing results, and I did notice a small change in my appetite while on the diet, but just not enough to make it worth the hassle.

As I understand it, for people with only a few pounds to lose (I was aiming for 15, but my BMI was already within the healthy range), SLD simply doesn't lower the set point enough to make up for the increased calories from oil or sugar.  In the future, when I don't have time for breakfast I might still throw back a tbsp of canola oil to hold me over until lunch, but given the option I'd definitely rather have my morning cereal or yogurt, which are about the same numer of calories anyway.

Does anyone have an idea whether just one tbsp of oil every other day or so would be helpful or better than nothing?  Every now and then I'm sure I'll have a window where it won't be an annoyance and my calories for the day are already low.

It looks like it did work for you. You just had to give it a break. Perhaps oil every other day will do it for you. I don't think it just dropped like that because you quit the oil, it seems like it was trying to "find the right time". I'd like to try that, too--less oil. I don't have much to lose either but it's going bee bop up and down but I think in 4 weeks I've lost 2 for sure. Perhaps if I give it a day break, or cut back on the oil, I'll see a drop. But I love the sleep benefits since I previously slept so poorly. I'll experiment, too, and we'll see what works for those with 10 pounds or less to get rid of.
