(Note: after I wrote this post I started an online blog at http://kimboosld.wordpress.com/ which I update daily. I will keep this page up-to-date on a less regular schedule.)Hello! I just found out about SLD two days ago. I'm 37 years old (female) and have fought being overweight my entire frackin' life! :::misery:::: So name the diet, I've tried it. Another yo-yo queen in the 'hood, and no story I can tell you about my life spent fighting fat is going to be any different that the ones you know. I read about this plan in (where else?) Freakonomics just the other day. I was intrigued. What nailed me was Seth's observation that when he ate, he only got hungier. BING! My husband and I purposely avoid breakfast, despite dire warnings from nutritionists high and low, because eating in the morning just made us ravenous by noon. The Hunger of it all! And, no, eating in the morning never never ever made us eat less later; it just ended up being more calories over all. We noticed this. All the popular research denied it. Six meals of 200 calories eat? Get real. The 200 calories only starts the machine. We knew we weren't crazy, but nothing we read validated our experiences...until now! I'm a full time grad student and husband is in school too; we are poor, so I can't get Seth's book until payday nor can I buy any groceries either. But this morning I thought, hey, just try it out with what you can. I made up a liter of water with about 200 calories of sugar and took it to work. I finished my coffee at 8:30, drank the hummingbird water at 10:30 (sippy sippy!) and went to fix my lunch at 1pm. I brought my usual rice/beans/veggies mix, which I make at home as it is wayyy cheap. It never fills me up, even a whole bowl of it, but takes off The Hunger pangs and then I usually end up snacking by 3 or 4pm. Then dinner...then after dinner snack... Imagine my SHOCK to be standing in front of the microwave at work and thinking, "What is this strange feeling?" And it was strange, indeed. It was my body being hungry, but not my brain! As I cooked the food, I didn't feel the normal panicky, ravenous hunger I feel right before I eat. It just wasn't there. And when I ate my lunch, it was yummy but not...I don't know how to describe it, but "not addictive" comes to mind. In fact I have not finished it. I did not do my usual "shovel it in before you die!!" routine. The motivation was gone. I ate until my body said "ugh, no more" and then stopped. O. Mi. Ghod.I do not know what I weigh right now. I'm a size 16 and I think (from past experiences) that I'm tipping 200 by a pound or two. I'm 5'6" and in excellent health, other than the BMI thing, and I even exercise regularly. I'm stating that here because tomorrow I'm going to weigh and post that #, and keep track for a while. Just to see. But even if I never lose a pound (a fate I've nearly come to accept...nearly...) I will consider myself blessed to be free of The Hunger. UPDATE 8/10/07: I weighed in at 207 pounds this morning, which tracks with what I guesstimated. As I above, I'm not sure I can believe I'll lose weight doing this, but I'm willing to find out. All I know for sure is that even last night at dinner time, when I would normally be chewing the furniture in hunger, I had a few crackers with cheese that husband fixed for me and a peanut butter spoon for dessert and that's IT! And I wasn't hungry! Wow oh wow ohwowohwowohwow...[sub][/sub] UPDATE 8/13/07: Weigh-in this morning came to 205.8. That is not a huge loss but two important factors to note: 1. I am not purposefully changing my eating patterns or what I eat (ie I am not "dieting"); 2. My TOM just started. This morning. Ugh. So it will be interesting to see what the next weigh-in brings. For more details, visit my daily blog! (link at top of this post). UPDATE 8/20/07: My weight went up to 206.4 a few days ago (TOM related, I'm sure), but this morning I'm down to 205.4. You can always read more details at my blog (link at top).

I'll be writing more about this in my blog, but I wanted to throw this out there as a way to call myself out: I need to be more structured with my flavorless calorie dosage. I'm mixing SW, ELOO, and Walnut Oil randomly, at different times each day. I don't want to make myself a slave to routine but I think in order to track progress/lack of progress I need some consistent variables to work off of. One problem is that I know the SW gives me stronger AS but I want all the cool benefits of using oil. Wah!
Fish or cut bait, my father used to say. I need to find a pattern and stick to it for at least a whole week.
....I'll get back to you on that...

True to my word, I have set up a "schedule" for SLD and have been sticking to it. I also introduced the JUDDDD concept, too. Here is my weight-loss plan of attack, such as it is:
SLD: 200 flavorless calories taken as SW about mid-morning (usually 10am or so). 125 flavorless calories taken as fish oil capsules in late afternoon (usuall around 4pm or so).
JUDDDD: Up days: eat whatever, whenever, in any volume. Due to SLD, though, caloric intake usually about 1500+/- Down days: stay below 1000 calories (including SLD dosages) mostly by eating only fruit or using my fruit juice/ACV concoction.
My ACV concoction is about 1.5 - 2 quarts: 2c fruit juice (any mixed juice high in vitamins/minerals/etc.), 2T Braggs ACV, 1T honey, and topped off with water.
And that's where things stand for now. I'll let you know about progress (you can also keep up with me at my blog; link in .sig).

Yeaaa! Weigh in!
202.2!!!!
That's almost five pounds! A slow loss for me; I've been doing SLD for about a month now. Also I've been kicking up my exercise routine with racquetball and jogging, so I'm sure there may be muscle weight gain added in there. I've tweaked my routine a bit -- I'm using xylitol water (XW) instead of sugar water (SW) which (after an over-enthusiastic beginning resulting in some discomfort) is working fabulously well for me.
Just wanted to share! Time to update ye olde ticker...

Nice loss -- I've been enjoying your posts here and on your KBS blog -- I'm just about where you are in weight, but much older! It's nice to see results, isn't it?

Thanks Principessa! Yes, it IS nice to see results.
Today is my 33rd day on SLD; I went up a pound from my last weigh in, due to TOM. But over all I'm just ecstatic over the changes in my life since I started. I know I have a long way to go but I'm very optimistic...for a change!
As usual, you can read more at my blog, but THIS I had to share here: Last night I wanted some chocolate (well you know, it’s a girl thing during that TOM) and I had about seven dark chocolate M&Ms out of a small bag, and then stopped. I did not stop because I felt guilty or ashamed or because I was consciously trying to “diet.” I stopped because about seven was enough. I did not feel compelled to eat any more than that. I wanted a taste, I got a taste, and I was satisfied.
Wow.

I know the feeling, we were at a baseball game last week, I got a little bag of M&M's, and only ate half the bag. Half was all I wanted. Last time I only ate half a bag of M&M's, it was because it was a 1 lb bag.

Started March 15, 2007 Lost: 98.6 lbs
Why worry today when you can worry tomorrow? Dwelling on the negative simply contributes to its power.
