Thistle oil (milk thistle)
« on: July 29, 2007, 12:32:42 PM »

After a horrible week trying to learn to like sugar-water, I'm about to change over to oil... with some trepidation, seeing so many find it hard to swallow. Has anyone tried thistle oil? It seems to me to have no flavor and be relatively swallowable, but does it work?

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) extract is generally taken in small doses to support the functions of the liver and gall bladder.
I don't think anyone here has yet reported taking the oil for SLD reasons?

Researching the interent with Google, I see that there are no known side effects, other than possibly a mild laxative effect. But there are numerous heatlh benefits, especially applied topically on the skin and in cosmetics. You might double check ratio of Omega 3's to Omega 6's? I don't know...

For anyone interested, thistle oil doesn't seem to be very effective after just over a week.  :(

"I see that there are no known side effects,"

While it continues to be an interesting substance to prostate cancer researchers,
flavinoids in milk thistle have been shown to stimulate growth of a standard
line of breast cancer cells in the test tube.

Out of an abundance of caution, this is not a substance I would take casually,
in volume, or with great regularity.
