The best thing that has happened is that I no longer get SO hungry that I feel like I am starving and have to eat a cheeseburger right away or suffer a horrible death. Tha's what being hungry has felt like for the last three years. Now when I get hungry it feels a lot more normal and it never involves McDonalds. -- peazazz

Whole 30 Day 1 has gone like a dream - no sweat.  I stuck to plan, having a supper of leftover beef shortribs (cooked in a Primal recipe marinade, so it's legal for the whole 30) and brussel sprouts.  I fed the guys frozen thin crust pizza, as DH had a meeting starting at 6, so supper had to be on the table with almost no prep time.

I even drank my mid-morning coffee black!  And it was OK!  The creaminess of the evaporated milk is what makes it so addictive - without that, it's a whole different beast - just a thin fluid, but warm and tasty just the same...

I'm out this evening (quilting, so no food involved), then will have herbal tea before bed.  Day 1 in the books!

Sanchiaza, how are you doing?

Day 2 has gone well.  2 1/2 lbs of bloat gone overnight and I'm back to my recent usual range (at the highest point I've been at for over 5 yrs!!), but it beats the number I saw yesterday morning.  One of the rules of the Whole 30 is that you are not supposed to weigh or measure for the whole 30 days, but I don't consider that a major factor for me.  I'll track at least for the first week, then maybe put the scale away.

B - 2 hard-boiled eggs, fresh and hot, half large tomato with olive oil and balsamic vinegar drizzled over top.  Coffee with coconut milk.
a.m. black coffee
L - 4 oz beef short rib (Primal marinade, no sugar), leftover brussel sprouts, an orange, green tea.
p.m. little can low sodium V8 juice, about 1 oz smoked fish
S - 6 oz portion lake trout, baked with sesame oil and soy sauce marinade, spinach salad with home-made (no sugar) Asian dressing, tea.
eve - herbal tea.

Paleotracker says 955 cals, only 18 g carb, 60% cals from fat.  And I'm very satisfied - no hunger whatsoever.  No cravings.  I just bought a huge grocery order this evening and have not snacked on a thing - it's great!

What a fantastic variation in your menu - I think I'm a bit lazy to do that but a great example of how you can achieve the goals without eating the same thing every day.

SQ, you're doing really well  :) I confess that I cheated the first three days and I weighed myself - within 3 days, I was down 1,5kg of bloat. I've now put my scale in the top cupboard of my bedroom because if it sits just outside the bathroom, it's too easy to stand on it on my way to the shower!

So, Day 7 for me today and not too bad:

Breakfast: half a bowl of fruit salad made with apples, oranges, strawberries, bananas, grapes and papaya. I picked out the banana because the fruit salad was made yesterday and bananas don't really keep overnight.
Snack: an apple
Lunch: a bowl of homemade tomato soup and a small bunch of black grapes
Supper: a small smoked mackerel fillet and a green salad with lettuce, cuccumber, carrots, tomatoes, chopped avocado and a vinaigrette dressing made with olive oil and apple cider vinegar.

I realise that I'm not eating nearly enough protein but I honestly just can't face any of the sources available to me. I was pleasantly surprised to actually be able to get the mackerel down because the only fish that has not made me feel nauseous just to think about it are smoked mussels. Perhaps there's something about the smoky flavour and texture. Probably the texture - I ate kingklip on the first two days and that texture reminds me of what I remember of the texture of chicken!

I must actually shake a leg and go and make some more tomato soup or else lunch at work tomorrow is going to be a bit of a disaster for me!

By the way, my mom wanted me to tell you that she says thank you. She is feeling really good on the Whole 30 and was curious to know how I had found out about it. So, all credit and kudos to you, SQ :)

Good luck for Day 3  8) I doubt you'll need it, though, because it sounds like you've hit your stride!

Whole 30 Day 3:
B - cooked turkey thigh (boneless, skinless) sliced and fried in coconut oil. Coffee with coconut milk. Homemade vegetable juice.
a.m. black coffee
L - about 3 oz leftover lake trout, leftover spinach salad, rest of the vegetable juice, banana, tea
p.m. tea, 6 grapes (scoffed from work),  a few pieces of the turkey thigh after work
S - 2 thighs of coconut curry chicken, cucumber salad with home-made Asian dressing, water
eve - tea, 6 fresh strawberries

PaleoTrack says 1210 cals, 40% prot, 41% fat.  I feel great.

Sanchiza, I am still weighing myself, too.  I enjoy the tracking, especially the first few days.  I will consider putting the scale away soon, but for now, I don't consider that a cheat.  I don't live or die by those numbers, but I find knowing them helps me.  I'm down 3.5 lbs from my start weight, although that was an extreme bloated weight, about 3 lbs above my recent (hate it!) normal.

So cool that your mom is doing this, too.  How long has she done this for, and how is she doing?  Does she eat meat?

Listen, years ago, I posted a Curried Fish Chowder recipe here in the forum, in the recipe section.  It's easily modified to a legal Whole30 version by substituting another oil/fat for the butter (coconut oil would be awesome, I think), and omitting the tsp of sugar.  You might find it an easier way to get some fish in.  Here's the link:  http://boards.sethroberts.net/index.php?topic=6910.0

Day 3, put to bed!

OK, so here's Day 4 of my Whole30:
B - 2 slices quite lean bacon, 2 eggs, about 1/4 cup frozen chopped spinach in the eggs, coconut oil to fry the spinach and eggs, coconut milk in my coffee.
a.m. - black coffee
L - large fresh spinach salad with cucumber, sweet onion, radish, a whole avocado chopped, a can of yellowfin tuna in olive oil, undrained, celery salt and pepper.  Dessert was about 8 fresh strawberries, tea.
p.m. few raw radishes, herbal tea, about 1 oz smoked salmon after work.
S - boneless pork loin, steamed parsnip and cauliflower, tea
eve - tea

I met a cousin today for a visit at Coffee Culture.  Had only a large mug of herbal tea.  Would usually have had a latte there.

The supper felt heavy in my belly, despite being small in quantity and low fat.  Not sure why, but an hour and a half later, I still feel uncomfortably stuffed.  PaleoTrack says 1160 kcals and 55% fat.  I'm never hungry.

Weight went down again this morning.  Now below where I've been cruising for the last few months.  I'm definitely less bloated.

Whole30 is still going strong, just finishing up Day 8.  I am down about 7 lbs from my very bloated starting weight, and down about 5 lbs from where I was cruising when I started this.  I had a couple of tiny non-compliances over the weekend.  One was communion at church, a little cube of bread and about a tablespoon of grape juice.  The other was a piece of pork rib that was cooked in a sauce with some brown sugar in it.  I ate it without sauce.

I feel great without the grains or sugar.  I had plain boiled parsnips tonight and they tasted so sweet that I could hardly finish them.  Interesting how tastes change.  I'm tracking my intake using PaleoTrack and I seem to average 1100-1500 kcals/d and about 60% fat.  Carbs range from 35-65 g/d.  I'm not making an effort to be low carb - I use fruit or sweeter veggies, like the parsnips - but without grains or sugars, it's easy to stay low carb.  I'm never usually hungry.

Hey there SQ - I'm just finishing up Day 14. I can't actually believe that by the end of tomorrow, I'll officially be halfway through. I am feeling a lot better than I was. Parsnips! I love parsnips! And they are in season at the moment as well! I am back on eggs, but only scrambled. A really good snack, I have found, is a tin of smoked mussels and an avocado. I usually share this with my mom because it's really rich and I can't finish the whole thing.

Certainly I'm viewing food in another light - now that I have got back into the swing of making food from scratch, I don't think I'm going to go back to readymade versions again in a hurry. I've been reading food labels with a lot more attention and I can't believe the amount of additives in various foodstuffs. This weekend I was looking for coconut milk and I discarded three different brands before I found one that was simply coconut and water. All the rest had sugar and salt in them as well as a lot of E numbers. Nasty! Luckily for me, I like cooking so this shouldn't be too much of a hardship.

Whole 30 Day 22.  And a long holiday weekend.  I'm still sticking to the rules almost 100%, except for the one about weighing myself.  I want to know what's happening, in the interest of self-experimentation.  I dropped 7 lbs in the first 4 days, 4 1/2 of which were actual weight, the rest just bloat from the previous day.  Since then, for the past 2 1/2 weeks, I have remained stable within a half lb.  150-151. Totally stuck, totally stable.  It's truly weird.  I keep waiting for a whoosh of weight loss, but it has not happened yet. I'm thinking that I will add in an SLD dose and see if that can get me below this very strong setpoint.

I tried sprinting for the first time last week and it was fun.  I'm going to try for a once a week sprinting workout.  Other than that, exercise has been mainly yardwork (digging gardens, man'handling rototillers, tons of squatting).

Whole30 Day 27.  Weight has finally started to move downwards after a 2 1/2 week plateau.  I'm at 148 this morning and wearing old fave jeans that haven't fit well for months.  Still another 10 lbs to get to where I was last August, but I'm determined to get there by my birthday in early July.  In fact, I'll likely stay with most of the whole30 restrictions even after Day 30.  I feel great eating like this, though I occasionally miss the cheese.

I made it through the long holiday weekend with only a minor cheat for a wine tasting at a winery.  About 2 oz total of sips of various wines and hard ciders.  But my first time at this local winery, so I wasn't going to not taste the wines.  We bought about 8 bottles of the various products to enjoy later.

Exercise continues to be entirely functional, not "sport".  I've spent hours running a paint roller, hauling and throwing garbage on dump runs, squatting to garden and running a rototiller.

Sanchiaza, how about you?  How are you feeling?

Well, I'm 13 days into my second Whole30, Day 45 to be exact.  I am now at 145 lbs and have been for 4 days now.  Feels great.  I'm getting back to the point where I "feel" good in my clothes.  Compliance has been pretty well perfect except for my Friday night martini with hubby and weighing myself daily.  No grains, no dairy, no legumes (except occ soy sauce), no sugar or sweeteners, no ohter alcohol (like wine or beer, or sweetened stuff).  I've made it through all kinds of meals out, travel, celebrations, potlucks.  I am willing to tell people what I am doing, and for the most part, they are understanding and don't bug me to take stuff that I shouldn't.  They never see me depriving myself or grumbling, so I guess that helps.  And I can now tell them that I've lost 10 lbs in the last 6 weeks and that I had gained 16 lbs last fall, so they understand where I'm going is just back to where I was.

I did start taking SLD oilshots to help move me off the 150 lb plateau and they were successful.  I'm basically trying for oilshots in the afternoon at least 4-5 days per week.  Still using ELOO, 2 tbsp.

Holy cow, I haven't posted in 7 months!  I'm getting a red warning at the top of this post.

I'm back on the wagon 3 days now.  Started about 153, now at 150.5, heading back to 135, using 2 tbsp/d of ELOO at midafternoon, as  before.  Plan is for total 90% compliance to Primal eating and Shangri La oilshots for the month of Feb with a goal of getting below 145 in the month.  And to get my running back up to a 5 mile long run.  But I'm sprinting once per week as well, and attempting to incorporate some bodywork (planks, maybe some push-ups).

Here goes again...
