I can definitely taste it so I'm careful to noseclip it and swish out my mouth as thoroughly as I can when I do it.

It isn't taste Seth means, it's aroma. Tasting it is ok, smelling it is the problem.

I think I realized something important - I identified my problem as being one of motivation yet I was not addressing it that way. I already know that I can lose weight by a couple of different techniques. Yet I was addressing the motivation issue by trying to tweak the techniques.

I am trying a hypnosis recording and (fingers crossed) it seems to be working already.

You might want to investigate EFT - emotional freedom technique. Just google it, lots of info. It's a tool for suppressing emotional stress, and has many uses in weight loss.

Very interesting. I googled and the first hit led me to a site that gives away a free 79 page manual.

That seems pretty encouraging to me, if people can try something for free then it seems there must be something about it that is working on some level.

Search Youtube, too, for video of people using EFT, to get the gist of the tapping.  It's good stuff.

I never watch TV, but last night, I purposely sat down to watch a show called "I Can Make You Thin".  He was teaching EFT on the show to his entire audience, and the home viewers, too. A bit sketchy, but at least some general exposure.  He said that EFT is now the leading therapy for trauma treatment in Kosovo, and is also being used in Rwanda.  That was news to me.  Pretty cool, though.

I meant to watch that but I forgot! I saw the first episode and I thought it was pretty good. I was skeptical as to whether it would help me personally, as it seems aimed at those who have more to lose. I.e. I'm not bingeing or eating when I'm not hungry. I know from experience that intuitively eating any food I want in moderation leads to weight gain. Still, the basic approach of working on mind/body appealed to me.

UGH

I need to accept that I'm never going to be able to do shots of oil. Noseclipping looks like the only option for me. I think it is important to eliminate things that aren't going to work instead of dickering around. When you want something to work and you just can't stick with it (like for example some of us with Weight Watchers) in a way it can do more harm than good, because it makes you feel bad about yourself and it wastes time that you could be using to try something that could work. In theory drinking oil should be easy (and I know it is for some) but I know that I find it so unpleasant that it's very unlikely that I'll overcome resistance to it. I'll simply forget to do it. And I've tried it enough to be able to seriously doubt I'll get used to it.

I tried sugar-water once and became ravenous almost instantly. I would be open to trying fructose or xylitol if I could remember to find some fructose at the store.

I have been listening to hypnosis recordings for a week and I do believe there is an effect on my eating habits and exercise motivation. Basically I only had the slightest divergence from diet all week (some homemade hash browns, not too much) and I have stuck to my exercise program. Neither of those things were happening before and the only change I made was the hypnosis recordings.

If you do change your mind and decide to try the oil again, definitely use a fresh bottle of either Bertolli or Filippo Beria ELOO. Start with no more than 1 teaspoon of oil and try floating it on top of a few ounces of ice water.  (Cool the water down and remove the ice cubes before you add the oil.)  Make sure you have a separate glass of plain or lightly-sweetened water to rinse your mouth with and/or use as a chaser plus a napkin to wipe your lips. Just hold your nose with your fingers while you are swallowing the oil/ice water mixture; don't worry about trying to do it like a shot.

BTW, I've read that fructose isn't good for you.

Hypnosis is working for me. I'm down over 4 pounds, and I have been sticking to my diet perfectly. My husband has a package of Trader Joe's ice cream sandwiches in the freezer and I haven't touched them. This is the first time in my entire life I am able to resist something like that. Hypnosis is consistently giving me the effect that I intermittently got from noseclipping and oil but is much easier to do and has other beneficial effects.

I still read these forums because they are interesting and I believe SLD does work for people.

What hypnosis tapes are you using and do you know what kinds of things it is saying?  Years ago I use to make my own tapes.  It was really helpful.

That's a funny question, when I've mentioned this quite a few people seem to have the impression that I might not be conscious of what the tapes are saying. I'm using the recordings that came with a book called "The Self-Hypnosis Diet" by Stephen and Joy Gurgevich.

I didn't know that much about hypnosis before I started doing this - it's a waking-state phenomenon. You do not become unconscious during a hypnosis session. So I am consciously aware of all of the suggestions. It is along the lines of "you can achieve your perfect weight", etc. Nothing that you wouldn't expect.

Now that I have been using the recording for a while I seem to go into a deeper trance and not pay as much attention to the words and my mind will drift off during it. Sometimes it does seem like becoming unconscious and I am not really hearing anything until he says "wake up". But that is a voluntary thing, if I wanted to start paying attention I could. It's just boring now that I've heard it over 20 times.

My husband was concerned that the recording might say something like "you will buy more of my tapes..."

I saw the Self Hypnosis Diet on sale at half price.  I decided to buy it because of your post.  I'll let you know how it goes once I have a chance to read and listen.  It looked like a good approach.

Fattening carbs and non-fattening carbs -
« Reply #42 on: May 08, 2008, 06:29:01 am »

I know what you're going through.   I have posted my recent revelation regarding fructose which is prevalent in our modern diet in table sugar (50% fructose and 50% sucrose), almost ALL fruit juices, and the invasively pervasive high fructose corn syrup (known as HFCS)

Well.... A recently published book called, 'The Sugar Fix' by Dr. Richard Johnson, M.D. reveals lots of historical, current, and ongoing research which seems to indicate that fructose is the big culprit.  Sure, Atkins works, but who wants a life with no carbs?  Not me!       Now I'm finding that it sure looks like Atkins threw the baby out with the bathwater.  Looks like people would do just as well, and without the carb cravings, if they only eliminated fructose from their life.

HFCS got a big big push in the 1970's and has been with us ever since because it is very sweet and very cheap.  What does this mean to me?  Sweet potatoes with butter - non-fattening.  Sweet potatoes with butter and sugar - fattening.   And so on.

I'm betting that you'll be surprised with how much your life improves if you can keep carbs in your life and just eliminate most of the fructose.

HFCS is heavily implicated with obesity, high blood pressure, kidney disease, headaches, ADHD, cardiovalcular disease, and more.  I've only just started the SLD, but am now also avoiding HFCS as much as I can and this seems to supercharge my efforts without hunger, without discipline, without spending a lot of money.

And there are alternatives to table sugar such as Splenda, Stevia, Xylitol, Blue Agave, and Brown Rice Syrup all of which have no fructose.

That's great for you if you can lose weight by only eliminating fructose. Sadly, that would result in massive weight gain for me. I gain like crazy eating sucrose and refined white flour.

That's very interesting, but I don't consume fructose, what's 2 grams of fructose per day?
Do you have to count in fructose from fruit? Does Dr. Richard Johnson advise eliminating fruit from one's diet?

Anyway - my perception of my weight gain is that my portions had become too big for an increasingly sedentary life.
