My pants did seem looser today. I think the +3 upswing is due to some rice I ate this weekend. I really have been strict about carbs so that bit of rice would be enough to cause a temporary change.

I'm going to leave my dose of oil out for a little bit so it isn't quite so chilly going down. That makes it slightly more palatable.

There are several things I can do, one of which is to drink more water throughout the day. I've lost weight in the past and I can do it again.

Some good news today -

-I'm down a fraction of a pound

-Experiencing more AS, though I don't think it's to the level y'all are talking about

I did eat breakfast this morning, two eggs. At work I have a jar of omega-3 peanut butter, and I decided to have a spoonful when hungry. So my calorie intake is way down for the day. I'm hungry for dinner but not ravenous.

Last night I took my oil without the Lecithin since I don't need it anymore for digestion.

I was thinking eggs might be a great vehicle for crazy-spicing, should I go that route. The idea of putting random spices on eggs seems less icky to me than putting it on other types of breakfast food.

RNT, that is how AS is for me mostly - before SLD I'd get really really hungry and HAVE to eat OR ELSE!! Now, I get hungry but can wait till dinner, and when I do eat I feel satisfied, not always still looking for more. And I was always "hungry" before, could eat any time, any place, and even keep eating after a big meal. SLD has given me far more control and blessed relief from a constantly raging appetite. Hope this makes sense.

My appetite is down, though I am not sure if it's from the oil, or if it is from training myself to eat less. I still feel hungry during the day, but it's less compelling. Today I had some pistachios for breakfast, and two spoonfuls of peanut butter for lunch. I had enough energy to take a walk and I wasn't irritable. Yesterday my weight was 151 point something, so that was great. I can't wait to get below 150!

I'm having a side effect of weight loss - heightened sense of smell, and I really enjoy this. I can smell a stand of pine trees off in the distance, the grass and other vegetation. I think it is a sign though, that my setpoint isn't lower yet. Which is fine.

Yesterday I was thinking I wasn't getting clear AS -- then one hour before my oil dose time, my appetite kicked in out of the blue and I felt regular hunger. I took my dose and then I was back to 'normal'. It's like the hunger is still there, but the oil blunts it severely.

I've been eating very small portions at dinner. Today all I had was a handful of pistachios, and then an early dinner with not even half of a hamburger and a small salad. I guess I am in AS land!

Interesting!  Just last week, while suffering from an allergy attack, I couldn't believe how sensitive my sense of smell was.  There were some forest fires on the western slope of the Rockies and when I went upstairs to go to bed, I could faintly smell smoke.  (Had the windows open.)  So I closed the windows so we wouldn't breathe it in all night, but I found it odd that I could smell it at all due to the allergies and sinus crud.  I was wondering if the renewed sense of smell was due to my move last year from Texas to Colorado...maybe the fresh air, higher elevation and lower humidity had something to do with it, or if it was due to SLD somehow?  Hmmmmmm....

I'm posting a gain, but I'm not too worried about it. I've been following my plan, and there's no way I ate two pounds worth of extra calories this week. It must be water.

I went to a party today and did not eat one bad thing. There was a pile of donuts, and cake, and I didn't bother with them. I had one hot dog and half of a steak. This is very unusual for me.

AS is very strange. It's like, I feel hunger and I'm aware of it, yet I'm not feeling compelled to eat and it doesn't require effort to resist eating food that isn't good for me. I recieved a lot of compliments on my weight loss so far.

This week coming up, I'm going to keep track of everything in Fitday, just as a reality check.

Blatant begging for advice and support
« Reply #24 on: March 15, 2008, 12:19:22 pm »

OK, it's nearly a year later and I've been dieting and SLD'ing on and off. I haven't gained, which is good, but I haven't been staying consistent enough to see real results. I KNOW that SLD creates real AS. I get excellent AS by noseclipping breakfast. I get the oil in by scrambling eggs with two tbsp of ELOO. A little overly oily but it gets the oil & protein in and it works. I have never cheated or gone off the diet on a day that I started out noseclipping. I'm also trying to do pretty close to strict Atkins. This is satisfying, leads to strong ketosis and AS, if only I could stick to it!

I know SLD works and I know Atkins works. How can I maintain the motivation to keep doing this day in, day out? One problem, for me, is that my husband doesn't know about the SLD/noseclip thing, so if I get up too late I don't noseclip my breakfast because I don't want him to see me doing it. I know that is silly but I don't want to get made fun of. He thinks the whole dieting thing is fairly ridiculous and unless I start showing success part of me agrees with him.

If anyone has any advice or encouragement whatsoever I'd love to hear it. As soon as I get this H20 out of my system from cheating and get back in ketosis I'll start posting my weight again.

Hi Results
I do know several people who have indeed lost a lot of weight on the original Atkins diet, only to regain all of it and more before too long because of boredom and extreme restriction.

For about a year I have been following what I refer to as an ‘Atkins-like’ eating plan.  No sweets, flour products, breads, cereals, rice, or potatoes.  Very little fruit.  However, unlike the actual Atkins, I do not restrict any low GI vegetables, in fact I eat quite a lot of them. I don’t eat salads as I don’t trust raw greens, for good reason.  I eat all the meats, fish, poultry, cheese I want, and get a certain amount of fat from these, but, unlike Atkins, I don’t go out of my way to consume excessive fats like bacon and cream.  I have gone from about 160 to 124 in the past year, and it became a lot easier since I started SLD five months ago.  I believe that this modified Atkins–like diet can be a base for an excellent, satisfying way of eating. It's just the extreme restriction that leaves you unsatisfied and erodes your motivation.  I do think it's a good idea to keep an eye on calories overall to see where you need to be in order to lose.

Rooting for you.

Actually, Atkins does not restrict vegetables. A lot of people think it's all about bacon topped with sour cream type food, but it's not. Just meat, fish, eggs, poultry, any type of salad or veg. You can have cream, cheeses and such but in limited amounts. Sounds like you and I are eating very similarly.

Several months ago I started combining SLD with low-carb and it has worked very well for me. :D

I would recommend reading some low-carb blogs plus at least one low-carb cookbook and one of the newer low-carb "philosophy" books such as one of the Protein Power books.

Once you understand how important eating low-carb is to your health (whether or not you are trying to lose weight) that should help you stay motivated. Also, learning new ways to prepare delicious low-carb foods should help as well.

Jimmy Moore's site http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com/ is a good, upbeat starting place. He has a great links page.

I don't do low carb, but I've read from the people who do, that if you read Gary Taubes book, it practically changes your life.

In phase I he restricts veggies to one cup/day. But I never went on phase I, I couldn´t do without coffee or dairy products, I have yet to find food that could substitute yoghurt or cottage cheese in my diet. The Atkins diet we know today seems to have been tweaked in the 90s, in the 70s it was pretty much the bacon topped with sour cream thing, anyway this is what I read.

I wouldn´t recommend Gary Taubes 435 p book on scientific studies, but one book on Atkins which is usually easy to read or Eades, Protein Power if you expect more scientific background.
