The wonderful thing about SLD is that you don't have to actually restrict yourself.  There has never been a point during the last 6 months where I felt like I was being restricted in what I could eat.  I have been eating healthier, for sure, but that's a side effect of the AS for me, not because I'm trying to avoid "bad" foods.  And there are plenty of times when I eat the same old crap I always used to eat, just much much much less of it! -- goblyn

Hi girls,
I’ve been reading this thread for two weeks or so and  find it very interesting.
In february I started with the oil and it worked quite well until the weekend before the last...
Then one invitation on Saturday and one on Sunday
Since these overeating days no AS at all. I took 2 TS of oil and was not hungry but had unresistable cravings for chocolate and nuts in the evening which led to about 2500 cal which is a great deal too much!
I drink a lot of coffee and I have noticed before that after a latte macchiato or cappuchino I am not hungry any more.
So today I started having a little protein snack with each cup of coffee in the afternoon and I finished the day with 1200 cal and no craving for nuts or chocolate   :D
A good start for coffee-shangri la
bye, brianna

bloo and others - I think this quote of Seth's succinctly explains how this technique works.  Ideally you want to use a drink or food that has significant flavor but little or no calories.

Been drinking Fanta Zero, an orange flavored diet soda which I like a lot, both inbetween and with meals. AS was good. I also drank Indian spiced tea with some milk and stevia between meals. Seems to help, too.

Just read the whole thread - interesting that the Chinese always drink green/jasmine tea with their meals and in between (in fact they drink it all the time)
A lot of people claimed that green tea is the key to their success in weight control, but everyone assumes its because green tea speeds up metabolism, however scientifically green tea speeds metabolism only a slight slight amount- also I noticed when I was in China that a high grade Oolong (Woolong) tea has a natural slight sweet flavour.   Anyway what is said here proves the theory of drinking flavoured calorie free food/drink with and  between  meals may induce AS.

Well, I wonder if its true AS or is it because sometimes hunger is psychological,  for me sometimes am bored, think I should have a snack, then think let me have  a cup of tea / get a sode instead.  Also having tea/diet soda with a meal means there isn't enough physical room in my stomach, so I feel full quicker.

I also think some people eat extra and put on weight not because they have excess appetite, they just eat because they are bored (just like me)

Could someone plese tell me if this is ok...

I do the shangrila diet with coconut oil (drink around 2 tsps a day).

Is it ok if my meals are also cooked in the same oil (coconut) as I use for doing the shangri-la diet? Will this enhance my weight loss, or will it slow down my weight loss? Thanks.

Well Indian Girl... Once I was convinced that me having olive oil as SLD and using olive oil in my food, well, all my life was hindering my AS. Then I made a poll on it, and it was inconclusive... http://boards.sethroberts.net/index.php?topic=3485.0;viewResults

so it might work, do give it a try!

Welcome Brianna  Keep us posted on your Shangri La coffee.  Is it producing AS for you?

SandyDown  I had heard the same re: green tea and didn't notice my metabolism speeding up either... so I agree with you.

I had found if I drink my "sweet stevia" tea continuously throughout the day there is AS... but as soon as I stop drinking it there is no more AS and I want to eat.  And I don't think it's because I'm hungry... I think it's emotional or psychological like SandyDown said.  So that's kind of a downer.

I added oil today since I hadn't had any in over a week.  I didn't keep the hour window with regards to my tea but I did regarding food.  I noticed I didn't crave my afternoon popcorn that I usually do. (That's a good thing  )  I have also heard/read that your body must have oil to lose weight... I'm told omega oils are best.... like OO or Flaxseed oil.  I will continue with the tea but will also see if adding the oil continues to work on the AS.  Hopefully that way I won't have to worry about being compulsive about the tea and continuously drinking it to keep the AS going.

IndianGirl  I've used ELOO for SLD and cook with it. And I use Flaxseed oil for SLD but don't cook with it.

What put me in a tailspin was that we had company for 4 days. We were constantly on the go.  I couldn't do my tea and we seemed to do nothing but eat!  So after last week... I gained instead of losing!  :(    So frustrating.  And just when I thought I was getting a handle on this thing.  So here I am starting over AGAIN... hoping to find Shangri-La one more time!   :D

Not true.
I lost at least 25 lbs on nothing but sugar water.

no, not really  :?

It supresses my hunger as good as the oil does, but not the appetite - I can eat without beeing hungry

I started with the oil again yesterday and I will have an eye on my calories as I did when I started SL.

Yesterday I started doing two things along these lines. I'm drinking green tea (something that I never had developed a taste for) with no sugar whenever I can find a 2 hour flavor/calorie window. And I'm switching from coffee with sugar to black coffee again only within a two window.

Unfortunately I'm not sure how well I'll be able to evaluate it though, because I'm always shifting away from carbs and increasing my intake of meat, eggs and cheese considerably. So if I lose weight or have better appetite suppression, I won't know which thing is effecting it.

Kevin, I found that green tea doesnīt give me the munchies while coffee does. After I had a cup of it I get carb cravings. Atkins didnīt allow all caffeinated drinks. But I find that diet coke or green tea work very well.

Shifting towards protein and fat rather than carbs will suppress your appetite alone. As a matter of fact I believe that in the long run you will get the best and most consistent results if you combine SLD and lowcarb. Lowcarb diets are hard to keep in the long run, because carbs really are addictive. SLD might be a great way to get over carb cravings.

The black coffee thing is really a short term idea since I don't want to drink a lot of coffee long term. I figure that drinking black coffee will be much better in terms of cravings if I drink it without sugar and milk. If I don't get any real AS from it, that will be fine, just as long as it helps me stop drinking coffee in the long run.

I'm really skeptical of sweet diet sodas myself. It's probably because for years I would buy a Diet Dr. Pepper and a candy bar to eat together. Do you know about Flavor-Flavor associations? It's been shown in studies that you develop flavor preferences faster if you pair a flavor you don't know with a flavor you do, the example I read was an unknown flavor with sugar. Also there was that recent study that showed yogurt with artificial sweetner to be more fattening than yogurt with sugar. I suspect that the body may have unhealthy reactions to anything that tastes sweet, regardless how much sugar is actually in it.
