After a lifetime of not weighing what I wanted, the idea that I can choose my weight is a stupendous dream for my mind to grasp. All along I've been hopeful, but not daring to believe in it, until it becomes real and lasting.  But now I live with feeling happiness with my body, and that feeling is a priceless gift. -- Heidi 555

Hello from Japan! (no ELOO!)
« on: March 11, 2007, 06:29:44 am »

My first post!

I've been on shangri-la for about three weeks after losing about 50 pounds the old-fashioned-painful-sans-appetite-supression-just-not-eating way and I just wish I had known about shangri-la before I started my diet 1.5 years ago!  In the first week using SLD I lost 3 pounds (and they're the "last 10-15" type to boot!)  and had such a noticeable loss that several friends and coworkers commented on it!  (is there any better motivation??)  Anyway, I've had pretty successful AS for the last weeks but I'm using sugar water or canola oil and the AS  is starting to wear off.....I had a feeling that I need to up my dosage from 2 tbs to 3 or oil (oil works better than SW for me).

Long story short, there is nowhere on this beautiful island I currently call home (Nihon!) that offers extra light olive oil, let alone something like a decent hamburger, so I was curious if anyone would be interested in doing some kind of business/trade with me for ELOO!  Perhaps anyone who loves a certain type of japanese non-perishable they just can't get back home, or japanese cultural item, or even someone who's interested in sending the me eloo for some extra cash for you...... give me a quote and maybe we can do some trading!    :D

On another note, there is a very catchy and relaxing song called "Sugar Water" from a japanese band called Cibo Matto from a couple years ago; maybe we ought to listen to it for Shangri-la motivation!  :D

Anyway, I look forward to posting more things on these boards as I lose more weight; and good luck to all of you as well!!!

Welcome, shinju_chan!

Your offer... Ehhhh... I'd like some natto... But it usually lives in the fridge, and I'm in Malaysia. Surely natto couldn't stand a 3-4 day shipping, right?

Actually, I'm not too fond of the only ELOO (Bertolli) available here. Let's see if anyone else can help you. But if not, I'll do it!

Oooh! Oooh! I know! Some Hayao Miyazaki films!! We're missing a couple. Can you get them with audio option Mandarin and subtitle option English there? :) (We like to listen to the Chinese dubs and read along in English, since the English dubs are usually crap, our Japanese is nonexistent, and we need to buff up our Chinese anyway.) Or maybe a few other animes, like Voices from a Distant Star... Hmmm...

Thanks for your reply!  I love natto too!! :shock:I feel crazy about it too and people are always shocked that I like it so much.  When I finally fell in love with it (after two attempts at eating it!) I used to eat it everyday for a couple months.  My favorite is one with egg in the tare!  Yum!  I can look in sending that or a DVD with chinese subs, but usually DVDs here are super super expensive.....so we'll see!  Thank you!!  How long have you lived in China by the way?  I've been here for about 8 months.

Welcome to the SLD forums, shinju_chan. I had the pleasure of visiting Japan for almost a month in 2002. I would love to live there for a couple years, in Kamakura or Kyoto and study woodblock (moku hanga, especially sosaku hanga) printmaking and other arts...maybe pottery...if only I could speak the language.

Ann H, I love Hayao Miyazaki films, too. Spirited Away is a favorite with me and my grandchildren, and My Neighbor Totoro, too.

Ha! I just got Kiki's Delivery Service in the mail. Stupid me -- it's the book! I thought that was cheap for the DVD!

Shinju Chan, I'd be tempted to try a locally available oil if I were you. I was using sesame oil for a while (I heard it had other weight-loss qualities) and that seemed to block my appetite just fine. I went back to ELOO after a slight problem with flavorful burps (they tasted nice, actually, but I didn't want to mess up my AS).

Actally, you know, shinju_chan, frenata's right. You can use any oil, it seems, as long as you block the taste/smell/feel. I'm having my best success here with some fairly crappy standard-grocery-shelf canola-sunflower seed blend, which I mix with coconut oil. It sounds like much the best idea for you to try a few easy-to-get local oils and see what works well for you. Just be prepared to clip your nose while you take your oil, and for a few minutes afterwards...

We can get Miyazaki DVDs reeeeally cheap here, actually, and seemingly legal even. These are the China-release editions that have found their way here. There's a 4-film pack on sale for 35 ringgit, which is only about 9 USD. And these versions come with Japanese, English, and Chinese audio as well as those subtitles. So I guess I'll keep shopping here... We've got all of his films except Totoro and Spirited Away (though we've seen S.A.), I think.

I highly recommend Howl's Moving Castle, actually, but NOT the English dub. They totally screwed up all the characterizations for some reason, and it ruins the film. You can watch that in either Chinese or Japanese audio and English subs, and it's very enjoyable. Yeah, Kiki is really fun, too, and we just saw and enjoyed Porco Rosso as well. Surprisingly amiable and fun film.

Thank God for Hayao Miyazaki! What a genius. And otherwise we've hardly got any films we like enough to own!! (The Princess Bride is great, though: one of the few US films we love.)

I'm sorry to hear that about Howl's. Since it was set in a surreal England, I thought the English voices sounded perfect. But if they screwed up the characterizations, that won't do.

Totoro and Spirited away are my two favorites. You've got a treat coming.

Hahaha, I was just thinking; man the boards are so quiet now that I'm the only one awake....*sob* and then you posted!  Where in Tokyo??? I'm so jealous!!  I love Tokyo to death; it's my goal to work there eventually.  My boyf is from Osaka; we'll be going there over Golden Week.  I'm looking forward to kui doare ("falling down eating" for non-speakers) but hopefully SLD will be there to help me!

Where in Niigata did you go?  I think I would love it if I didn't have to live here...  :)

I live right by Shibuya.  It's pretty convenient being in the city but I don't like my train station since there aren't many restaurants/stores around it.  :(  I've been to Niigata only a few times for work but from what I've seen, it's a really cool place!  Great rice!

I assume you're in Osaka now as it's Golden Week.  Have fun and eat lots!  :D
