After a lifetime of not weighing what I wanted, the idea that I can choose my weight is a stupendous dream for my mind to grasp. All along I've been hopeful, but not daring to believe in it, until it becomes real and lasting.  But now I live with feeling happiness with my body, and that feeling is a priceless gift. -- Heidi 555

Very nice. However, I find the quote under your picture rather out of place since, at least to me, you come across here and in some of your articles shown there with  a distinct air negativity and cynicism. But also, as a writer, I am sure that was your intention.

Pinkmug - You attacked me over seeming 'anger management issues', then opined that I'm 'overstressed', referring to my posts you didn't like, then speculated that that was why I had gained weight. I think you were way out of bounds. I would not make such callous remarks about people (without even addressing them directly, but talking about them), in particular their body shapes, in a weight-loss forum.

I'm nearly 1.80, size 10-12, weigh 73 kgs and run about 50 k a week, therefore it doesn't sting all that much. But it does sting a little, because you have no right to.

Heike, I do think you have issues, and I could care less about what you think of my opinion. Just as you do about everybody else, since we did not tell you what you wanted to hear  (though you now seem to recognize you went overboard and want to win everybody's sympathy - now everybody's lovely, nice, informative, etc., whereas before they were a pack of wolves, crazy, bonkers, aggressive, etc.). Please don't address me again, I have no patience for you - I already have 3 kids at home, that's immaturity enough. In more than 10 years of internet forums this is the first time I say this to anyone. Oh well, there's always a first time for everything. Now go ahead, nag me some more, I don't care. I'll just ignore you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll

In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who enters an established community such as an online discussion forum and intentionally tries to cause disruption, often in the form of posting messages that are inflammatory, insulting, incorrect, inaccurate, absurd, or off-topic, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others.

You know what Pinkmug, I agree with you 100%. This has always been such a friendly , happy supportive place, and we have allowed it to be turned into the opposite. I'm very sorry I participated, added fuel to the fire.  I love a good debate, but in a positive knowledgeable way.

falconcy, I'm looking up that site. looks informative.

Ah, a troll, totally makes sense, falconcy.  Although some excellent information was elicited in the process - no loss there!  And can I just say - what impressive people post to this forum!!  It's very cool.

Guys, I don't think peakmouse is a troll. I also really don't think her posts are so insulting. I think her discourse in this community just happened to get off on a bad foot. I feel horrible when I get on a bad foot with a community I'm interested in: let's be nice, eh? :)

You know, most of the net discussion is quite confrontational, harsh and "labelling". And quick to judge. Our tone here is generally very gentle, understanding-seeking and tactful. Peakmouse simply innocently came in with a different type of discourse than we are used to in this forum. And as frenata our Noble Weasel has pointed out, Peak's posts are very polite compared to much standard net discussions. She just came across as brash, likely due to innocent reasons.

And not all of us will "gell" (get along well naturally) with each other. That is supremely natural. No biggie, eh? I can list several people I personally admire and like a lot who for some reason just can't stand me. I even lost a great job recently due to this. But such is life, and this is the real diversity among humans. Ya?

I think Ann H has the right of it. I don't think Peakmouse meant to get off on the wrong foot.

And I'm qualified to weigh in, because I have been a troll in my time. It's not as low as a spammer -- it's far less profitable but much more fun.

I agree, Ann.  While it's off putting to be called crazy, etc.  I can say that there are occasional posts that raise eyebrows for me on this forum. Usually I think to myself "to each his/her own."  And if I care enough, I post a comment with my opinion.  Peakmouse is free to worry about longterm consequences and I'm free not to.   :)

I do think she poses a perfectly valid question.  Perhaps some of the issue was that she appeared to already have an opinion to defend on the topic.  I think we should let this topic die down a bit and show some patience in getting to know Peakmouse - hopefully she will do the same for us.

Please do continue to post Peakmouse - I for one will follow your progress with interest.

For what it's worth, another vote for not a troll.

Troll or not..it really does not matter much...(to me anyway)

Here is my perspective peakmouse,

I went to see a doc, a couple of days ago. A clean bill of health I was granted along with an aviation first class medical.

The doc noticed something unusual in my urine, a high amount of something called keytones. He explained to me that it could mean two things,
My body is breaking down fat and eating it, or, It could mean diabetes if sugar is found along with it. No sugar was in my urine.

So, I am surviving by eating 1500 cals a day or so ( I don't know because I never took the time to learn how to count cals.) I am not hungry, and my muscles are not atrophying. Am I starving? No, because my body has lowered its set point and is merrily feasting on the calories in my arse .I have no idea how many calories my wobbly bits provide my body with. How many calories does my body really need? Beats me. If my body does not get the nutrition it needs from my fat, then I'll get hungry and eat more. Or have cravings for things.

I am not sure if you noticed or not, but people on SLD crave healthy nutritious snacks. I think they are craving vits&mins not calories. We are getting calories from our fat and any vitamines we did not store while we were chowing down on that extra piece of southern fried chicken two years ago, we are are providing our body with today, in that half cup of yogurt, 2 pieces of sushi or whatever it is we happen to desire.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Dez

I think the idea of craving the vitamins and minerals not stored in our fat makes fabulous sense.  Yeah, my body still has plenty of access to stored calories, ha.  But not for much longer!  It fits with why in maintenance you can eat more calories - the feast of fat stores is gone...gone...gone...  Yeah!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketosis

"[...] a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies which can be used by the body for energy."

"Deliberately induced ketosis through a low-carbohydrate diet has been used to treat medical conditions although most such treatments remain controversial. The ketogenic diet is an approach to treating epilepsy, and the Atkins Nutritional Approach (and many similar diets) is marketed for treating obesity. The very low calorie, medically supervised Bernstein, Lighter Life and Lindora diets also use ketosis for weight loss."
