WEEKLY NOTES for losing-it
« Reply #3 on: December 03, 2006, 07:50:16 PM »

WEEKLY NOTES:

W-1:

AS increased with increased dosage of TC (was unable to maintain losses through calorie reduction alone during October - November)
Gained ability to maintain calorie reduction @ 1200-1500 daily calories
Problems encountered: extreme heartburn with ELOO and ELOO combined w/t FSO caps
Tweaked TC & types of oil to increase AS & reduce digestive problem
Tweaked doseage time to find most convenient (early morning/bedtime)

SLD:  1st Week Averaged 1412 daily calories + 2 lbs per week WL.
Average AS: 4.4.
Maintained WL from PRE-SLD efforts & continued losing pounds through SLD (Kick-started WL. pre-SLD, with high-fat KD for 4 days, 1200 calories)
(See Pre-SLD WL effort stats: from October 9 posting below/or link above)

W-2:

AS increased with increased dosage TC (was unable to maintain losses through calorie reduction alone during October - November)
Gained ability with AS to maintain calorie reduction @ 1200-1500 daily calories
Problems encountered: extreme heartburn with ELOO and ELOO combined w/t FSO caps
Tweaked TC & types of oil to increase AS & reduce digestive problem
Tweaked doseage time to find most convenient (early morning/bedtime)

SLD:  2nd Week -Intestinal flu / WL result of intestinal clearing, only.
Maintained WL from PRE-SLD efforts & continued losing pounds through SLD

W-3:

On 21st, increased ELOO, decreased ENOVA: switched amounts of oil mix to 1 TBS ELOO & 1/2 TBS ENOVA for both am & pm doseages. AS seems good with that change, so far.
The SLD Effect:  Tried to drink hot SW on afternoon of December 21, but it was much too sweet, and I couldn't stomach it at all.  I can't take extra-sweet tastes right now, including dark chocolate and SLD sugar-water mixture (makes me feel nauseous).
Fine with fruits and vegetables, yogurt, kefir -I could possibly eat just those and be happy for awhile. Desiring fruits.
Desiring, but not craving, some starchy carbs which I've been avoiding for this week.
Trying to keep daily calories near 1200 range for awhile.

SLD: 3rd Week Averaged 1510 daily calories + 2 lbs per week WL
Average AS = 3.2 : strong enough to stick to average daily 1200 calories w/t strongest hunger felt mainly in morning and at mealtimes.
Maintaining previous WL achieved on KD & SLD & still losing it

3 weeks SLD Totals = WL = 6 lbs @ 1200-1500 daily calories, inclusive of Olive/Canola/Soy oils X 2 daily @ 360 daily TC

W-4
Weight increased 4 lbs. from holiday over-eating, mostly pumpkin pie, my favorite. Shedding it over the week, also.
Results: sluggish, heavy, constipated. Ready to get back on the wagon with lighter calorie consumption.
Stopped ENOVA. Added Flax Seed Oil to TC blend for health benefits.
Dec. 28: Added Noseclipped Extra Virgin Coconut Oil &  Raw Honey or Stevia mix in warm water for p.m TC for thyroid/health benefits of EVCO, & health benefits of RH
Also experimenting with NC protein shakes w/oil, etc. for TC., raw ACV also.
Find myself hungry for tastes & texture, not for physical satiation. Especially over holidays, I easily ignored any AS to taste foods = "Taste Hunger"

SLD: 4th Week Averaged 1673 daily calories + 1 lb total WG
Average AS = 3.7
Christmas Holidays - went off the calorie-watch

W-5
AS seems best so far when taken all at once (3 Tbs mixed oils) mid-morning or mid-afternoon, and may be even better w/1 tsp sugar mixed with the oils and a shot of water, followed by a 6 to 8 oz glass of water.

W-6
Although my weight has not decreased dramatically over the past 3 weeks, my body shape is changing. As of January 10, I am down a dress/pant size (down from size 18 to 15-16) and had to go shopping for a few things that fit. Actually fit snuglly into some size 13-14 jeans, too. AS has been good. I'm a bit disappointed that the weight loss has not been almost double what it is. It's been a 7 pounds loss total over 6 weeks - ups and downs with flu and Christmas/New Year holidays, and not much exercise, at least not steady. On the other hand, I'm no longer 204 (pre-SLD dieting starting weight) or even 192 (SLD starting weight), and I've been able to maintain weight loss, even with a few bumps upward on the scale in December.

W-7
I've stopped the calorie counting and recording on my 'eat-o-log' at this forum for now. I think I have a good handle on what and how much I'm eating, and I plan to apply the nutritional and exercise guidelines of Dr. Al Sear's book, The Doctor's Heart Cure, which, basically, for me, means adding more protein and doing progressively accelerating intensity exercises for a few minutes a day (starting at 20 minutes, decreasing time to 6 minutes daily while increasing intensity). The (lean) protein recommendations are 1 gram per pound of body weight until the healthy weight is acheived, and afterwards, 1/2 gram per pound of body weight. I feel that the doctor's nutritional plan will work well with SLD, and many of the recommendations, I had already incoporated into my lifestyle through my own research for heart health/strengthening both body and heart, before reading his book. His P.A.C.E. exercise plan is designed for heart health, and my favorite exercises are high intensity, short workouts on weight machines, especially Nautilus, although I no longer have a gym membership.
1/17/06: With coconut oil only, AS has strengthened considerably. Today it is about level 1. I did a few measurements in the afternoon, and although the weight has been plateaued for weeks, I found that bust, waist, hips, thighs and calves have shed about 1/2" - 1" each. Go figure. This afternoon, I started, in earnest, resistance weight training 3 X week.
1/18/06: Plateau is breaking with ketogenic fat-fast. 1 pound down this morning!

W-8
1/24/06: Appetite is still very low, approximately at level 2 most of the day. I am usually hungry in the morning, not famished, by any means, but ready to eat something - usually yogurt and fruit, or soup, or kefir or sometimes cereal with fruit. Occasionally I might have fish or leftovers from a dinner or lunch. The scale is slow to move downward, and fluctuates 1-3 pounds up and down on any morning, while that can be due to unpassed foods, water or edema. I'd rather not look at the scale, but have been doing so for some time, anyway, because of CHF, a heart condition in which I should monitor myself for sudden weight gains (edema). While my weight may remain on one number, at the same time, my body continuously and definitely changing. Inches and fat are shedding. These factors, my smaller clothing size and the look of my body are the more reliable measuring tools. This week, I purchased a size 12 bathing suit which fits perfectly. I can wear a size smaller shoe as well.

1/27/07 Physical activity has increased since beginning slim-quest & SLD. Am brisk walking almost daily (45 minutes); resistance training 2-3 X  weekly, 3 sets, 30-45 minutes. Another 7" lost this month for a total of 11 1/4" since beginning SLD.

W-9
1/31/07 Down 1 pound. Am going to try reducing my oil dose to 2 Tbs oil, either VCO or mixed oils including VCO, ELOO, FSO and MNO. I took 2 Tbs last night. Hopefully, to stimulate fat losses and keep appetite down, I plan on changing my eating patterns to alternating Lean Day / Feast Day (i.e., Up Day/Down Day) . On Lean Day, I'll take the 2 Tbs oil. On Feast Day, I'll eat 1 medium apple before each meal instead of oil, which would be mearly the same in calories (about 240).  I want to see how effective this might be -- or not. The "apple diet" method of appetite suppression has worked before for me in the past. Both "Apple Diet" and "UpDayDownDay" are methods found in Woman's World magazine, although no caloric restriction is suggested for "Up day" which I'll call "Feast Day," to remember more easily. The intermittent dieting supposively triggers SIRT1, the "skinny gene," a gene which improves fat metabolism and slows the aging process, and mayb reduce free-radical damage by up to 90%, and may heal some conditions, according to Dr.  James B. Johnson, M.D. of  Louisiana State University (from Woman's World, January 30, 2007 pp. 18, 19).

W-10 + 11
2/12/07 I'm down 6 pounds since 1/31/07 (update above) - 180 as of this morning. Down a pound from yesterday, and expecting to still be at 181 - or higher - today, not having completely digested and eliminated yesterday's meals. I've been on my combination SLD + JUDDDD plan of alternating day modified fasting/caloire restriction. It's working very well, and the fat is shedding pretty quickly now from this usually slow loser. The lean days, every other day restricting caloires to about 20-25% of caloric needs (for me, about 350-450 calories) is not too difficult a discipline, taking 2 Tbs oil as SLD dose on those days. I do feel hunger more in the late afternoon/evening. I have decided, in addition to the 2 Tbs dose on Lean Days to resume taking 3 Tbs oil on Feast Days, too, for better SLD appetite suppression on my Lean Days  and to assure (theoretically) a continued set point reduction. I resumed the oil before bedtime last night.

W-12
2/17/07 -179 pounds. The SLD/JUDDDD is going well. Since I didn't complete the 4-5 day modified Fat Fast I'd wanted to do this time last month, I'm doing it now. Have been on it a couple days, and am at least a pound down so far. I'm trying to do it for 5 days, which would be until the 20th (but not through). The weight is still not coming off as quickly as I thought last week, with the SLD/JUDDDD combination, but perhaps faster or more steadily than it was before. To be watched in the upcoming weeks, although weight loss is one of two equal reasons for starting JUDDDD, the other being possiblity of better health, especially in light of having CHF.
2/19/07 - 177 pounds and can fit nicely into the pair of 13-14 jeans I bought last month!
2/25/07 - 179 lbs stabilized? I bought another pair of 14's. Nice fit.

W-13
2/27/07 - 177 pounds. Back down on my old scale after bounce up to 179. Last night I renewed my membership for a year at Bally Fitness, after 2 years not working out there. My daughter has shed 16 pounds this year as of yesterday toward her goals with workouts and calorie reduction. It will be easier to go to Bally, down the street than across town to her apartment's fitness room. SLD/JUDDDD still going well.

W-14
3/4/07 - 175 lbs. after breakfast of steak and eggs & green tea drink! Out of town for weekend and had to weigh in at home, noon-time. Did ok with SLD + JUDDDD over the weekend and eating out. Had mostly protein foods - Saturday night had a great big crab cake at Ruby Tuesday's with green beans and a cherry-tomato/mozzerella ball green salad with light Italian dressing. No dessert, BUT had 4 shots of Jack Daniels! I had ordered and finished one, and reordered. The waiter brought the second one as a triple, though I didn't ask -- and said, "This time, I asked for a "real" shot. But the waiter charged for the full triple. He was so attentive with the meal and personable that we couldn't make a fuss over the extra charges, and it was hard to hear in there, so he might have thought I asked for a triple.  Ha ... I'll bet :o Of course, I wasn't about to send it back to the bar, either. Yum. As Anchorman put it..."I love Scotch. Scotch, Scotch, Scotch..." Anchorman: the Legend of Ron Burgandy
3/5/07 - I tried on a pair of size 12 Regular jeans which I've not worn since 2002. They fit!

W-15
3/11/07 - still 175 lbs. Muscles are getting more defined already from working out at gym, breathing exercises, walking. Love being able to see the hip bones in my abdominal pelvic area! Oh,yeah! I am visualizing slender upper arms, small waist, trim hips and thighs, smooth skin and muscle tone. To help myself along, I've got a couple photos of myself in my 20's on my "Miracle" bulletin board (that is actually the name which is on the board. 3/13/07 - still 175 lbs, but I pulled on a couple pair size 16, 15-16, and they are MUCH TOO BIG! I'm definitely wearing 12 - 14s, and have just one pair of 15-16's which is smaller than the others which I can wear for awhile yet.
3/16/07 - still 175: starting a week of ketogenic plateau bust diet: Doctor's Fast Weight Loss Diet. Lean Protein, Water, supplements, fiber.

W-16
3/20/07 - have been a few days on KD, but still 175. Have lost an inch here and there, but not on legs or arms. For some reason, the flab parts look extra flabby right now. Mostly wearing size 12 jeans. Went off my KD early - bloating/edema.
3/22/07 - finally! Down a pound - maybe 2, but I record 174 until tomorrow.
3/24/07 - down 2 more pounds - WaHOO! Started eating in the Zone a couple days ago, and also doing Gittleman's Liver/Lymph detox with cranberry juice water and lemon water, etc.

W=17
Low of 172. Ready to SLiDe down the scale to the 160's and below. Please, Powers-That-Be...

W-18
3/31/07 Hit low of 171, almost half-way to goal, and lost some more inches. How I want this to go faster. Sometimes I look more slender in the mirror, but sometimes I look blobby and heavy. Weird. The skin is soft (rather itchy lately - I think it is one of my skin creams or supplements), and the remaining fat is squishy and jello-y, especially on the tummy, like nothing it's ever looked like before at any time of weight loss. It's interesting. Hope it comes off mighty soon. Constant at the gym with strength training and treadmill/or crosstrainer. Love calorie restricted days more than days that I eat regularly. Feels best not to eat much, physically and mentally.

W-19
4/7/07 Still at 171, but fluctuated upward over the week. Lost some water-weight last night, I can feel it and see it in my face - it's been heavy-looking lately. Had two CR days as I didn't feel like eating much yesterday - just not really hungry. Feeling physically lighter and springier this morning, less "stodgy."

W-20
4/14/07 Bumped up to 173 yesterday, down to 172 today, though the manual scales are a bit difficult and precision is not there. Was hoping to begin this week in the 160s. So ready to move down the scale some more.

W-21
4/21/07 - Consistent plateau. I think a change from Synthroid to Armour Thyroid is causing extra water retention -- see it in belly at night, even morning today. Starting CNut Oil again, alternating with ELOO/AO/FSO mixtures. May get MacNut Oil again, as I seemed to shed pounds a little better on that one. Am taking in some extra fluids at the moment - including Yerba Mate drinks to see if I can get the back end moving the earth more regularly. Also may try the reverse SLD with calorie-less flavors in conjunction with oil flavorless calories.

W-22
5/1/07 - still on plateau, but at a pretty stable and low-end 170 lbs. Lots of pee and poo passing at this time. I realized I was doing the reverse SLD (called C-FF - calorie-free flavors) since I'd been doing the fat flush beverages during the day for a few weeks - lemon/fiber water and cranberry juice-water or combined cran/lemon water. Tried 5 days of the 7 day General Motors Weight Loss Diet and called it off. No extra weight being shed. I think I'm still gaining a lot of lean muscle, as evidenced by my figure. So, if I wasn't exercising daily, I might be 5 or 10 pounds lighter on the scale, I think. I'd rather be sculpted and slender, fit and well-framed. Back on SLD/JUDDDD regularly as of yesterday. Dr. Mercola's site indictes that consumption of fish may lead to obesity and diabetes because of the mercury and toxin levels. Canned wild Alaskan salmon is generally ok, although tuna is warned about. Dang.

W-23
5/9/07 - still on plateau with a lot of uncomfortable edema in face, chest, abdomen. Down a couple pounds of water weight this morning, thank goodness. Am changing from my beloved but stricter JUDDDD intermittent CR, to a more zig-zag calorie restriction - i.e., 1400 one day, 800 the next day, 1500 one day, 700 the next, and so forth. Will use 3 Tbs oil at bedtime, and continue lemon-water, cran-water, cran-lemon water sweetened with stevia and supplemented with Benefiber and/or ground flaxseed. Will try to get Macadamia Nut Oil again. Have been using Coconut Oil, as am out of ELOO. May try reverse-diet style eating -- main meal for breakfast (protein, veggies, fruit), medium-small meal for lunch (yogurt, lean protein, veggies or fruit) and small dinner (cereal or protein shake, fruit) using The Zone for nutritional balance.
5/12/07 - BIG edema spike yesterday - up 5 lbs from low of 170 lbs to high of 175 lbs - fluid retention from carbs and possibly exercise; also angina, so haven't done exercise all week. Using WO and ELOO for now.

W-26
5/26/07 - a disappointing month, scale and inch-wise. I've lost no pounds and only 1/2" from each upper arm. My boobies measured almost 1" bigger, which I think is hormonal / water, not fat gain. I had to go off exercise for a couple weeks of this month due to edema-related angina, and perhaps too low of calories for AMR which might cause oxygen restriction to the heart. I've only done a little exercise over the past 2 weeks, but started belly dance, and walked for 2 hours yesterday, and did whole body strength training mid-week (one day only). I'll be back on the daily routine this week, plus the Monday afternoon dance class. I changed the workout routine to do strength/weights full body on Tuesday and Thursday, with walking 2 hours or 2 miles on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Monday includes the dance class (a strenous routine for me), and weekends are resting and/or walking. I may start up JUDDDD again with ad-libum on Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, calorie restriction on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. Since I have dance and walking on Monday, I'd have 2 ad-libitum days in a row to keep calories high enough not to oxygen-deprive the heart.

W-?
9/29/07 - 165 lbs. I'm truly amazed and disappointed that I've not lost more poundage and inches since starting weight training and cardio on March 1. I've been very consistent with exercise and nutrition for almost 7 months, now. 3 Days per week heavy weight training, and 3-7 days cardio. In that time, I've lost only 11 lbs by scale weight. It's possible, though, that I've gained about 10-20 pounds lean muscle. I'm not eating junk food, fast food or sodas. My nutrition is clean with an occasional treat. I am happy with the muscle that has been developing. There is still way too much fat overlaying the muscle to see it well enough, though...still have love handles, fatty patties on the upper thighs, knees, hips and triceps. I've tried doing exercise twice daily, then once daily, changing routines; zig-zagging calories, etc. As we are heading into autumn, now, I'm going to cut out fruits and go back to eating basically lean protein with fiberous green carbs, 2-3 Tbs oil, and add in a few starch carbs (brown rice, yams, oatmeal) before afternoon (basic body builder's diet). I've stopped eating yogurt & berries for the time being as its a ditto food for me. Have been noseclipping some oatmeal-protein meals and some SLD oil-protien shake meals over the past couple weeks; perhaps setpoint will go down and the weight with it. At the same time, I'm very happy the weight hasn't increased. This is the longest time that fat weight has stayed OFF consistently, and appetite has remained normal for the most part. Of course, my diet continues with very nutritious, healthy food, too. The only thing that has worked, recently, to shed pounds is to cut out all dairy, all grains, all fruit; eating only lean protein and greens.

1st SLD pound lost today! Hooray! :D

This morning, when I told him I lost my first pound on it, my husband indicated he "might" join me for the SLD daily Oil & Lube. He knows I've lost 13 lbs so far since October 9, through my various weight-loss efforts, and he wants to lose weight, too - asked me to help him, awhile back - but he's not committed to a plan yet, and therefore hasn't lost anything. Will talk about it with me tonight. He has a lot of weight to lose, with more of an appetite for goodies, especially sugar treats, than I have. I think SLD would be successful for him - easier than for me - and we both must lose weight for health reasons.

The appetite suppression has been OK, but I probably need to add more tasteless calories to bring the number from 240, closer to 380. I decided to increase the number of  flax seed oil capsules I'm taking with my supplement regimen to 12 (120 calories) & will take them with OLOO and perhaps 1 hour before or after evening meal -- or after the last snack of the day, being flexible. I might add some other health oil as part of that regime, next week. I had changed to OLOO from ENOVA after the first couple days, as I'm not sure I wan't to imbibe mass quantities of scientifically modified oil. I'd happily gulp EVOO if the basis of Dr. Robert's set point (raising/lowering) theory (as I understand it) wasn't based on The Amazing Brain's flavor/calorie (therefore, as I see it = emotional/appetite desire/lust/cravings) associations to foods, whether nutritious or not. -losing-it

now that you've increased the dose I think you are on the right track.

Thanks for putting all your tracking data in the first post.

Tweaking dosage for # flavorless calories & times
« Reply #7 on: December 07, 2006, 06:40:13 AM »

Since the appetite suppression has been ok, but at times, unnoticeable, I've increased the oil dosage from 240 to get closer to 382 flavorless calories.. My current weight (Dec. 7, 2006) is 191: X 2 = 382 flavorless calories. Tried the flax seed oil caps 4 X 3 times yesterday (12 = 120 cal), but had trouble with feeling them "stuck" in my throat & bobbing in all that oil & water after dosage at bedtime  :(

Will be trying 1 1/2 Tbs ELOO = 360 calories + 3 flax seed oil caps 2X daily (mid-morning/bedtime).

Husband is willing to try SLD (if only with hopes it will be easier than regular dieting)! He took his first 2 Tbs dose oil at bedtime last night. He has a very sensitive digestion, but seemed to do OK on that dose so far, and even at night. But in the morning rush, he forgot to take his bottle of oil (and his work-cellphone) in to work. Needs more good oil to nourish that smarty brain of his.

Good oil for that is flax seed. Read about it - omega 3 are the best for the brain, in fact developing babies and infants need a lot for the brains to develop, so pregnant women and nursing moms are advsied to up their intake of omega 3's. It's also good for hiperactivity, in fact I'm trying to figure out how to give it to my ADD picky eater 12 year old daughter! She likes salmon fortunately but that's all.

I used to get that stuck in the throat feeling with oil capsules. Why don't you go for the real maccoy (liquid flax seed oil)? :)

I'm with you on all the above, Pinkmug!

Getting husband to take supplements is nearly impossible.  :)But, miracle of miracles, he's decided to try SLD, hoping it will be an easier route than getting hungry & not eating things he likes.

Both husband & I have been taking flax seed oil caps for heart health (since fish oil upsets his digestion) for a couple years (I hope he takes his, although I know he doesn't do so as often as he needs to). I decided to increase my SLD oil doseage, and have the flax seed oil caps on hand, so thought I'd give those a try first.

I take a lot of supplements for heart health which gets very expensive -- too expensive, in fact, so haven't bought bottled flax-seed oil, yet. I may try it next week for me, but if it has a taste, don't think my husband would try the noseplug thing. He's "stubborn Dutch." :P If I push him too far on SLD or any diet things, he'll balk & quit. I do keep walnuts in the freezer/fridge, and put them on both our salads, or have a few for snack or AS 30 minutes before a meal (for me) from time to time, so he does get a bit more EFA's/Omega 3, as well as from some fish & other seafood and other good things. We use EVOO for cooking.

Our (adult) daughter, who can be as stubborn as he is, but doesn't have very much weight to lose, called me the other day just to say, "I'm not drinking oil. That's all I have to say about that." She may come around, though. Back to the flax-seed oil -- it, and/or fish oil would be good for her 3 kids -- 1 with ADD, 1 overweight, and 1 buff pre-teen who really needs DHA for skin and temperament (on the hot-tempered side); the latter does love walnuts, maybe because his brain knows he needs Omega 3, which is said to reduce aggression, mellowing out the temperamentally callenged. I've suggested fish oil and flax seed oil for him, but so far, no go, but their mom, our daughter, will come around. She is very interested in the field of medicine, including naturopathic medicine, which she'd like to study. Sometimes I wonder if the 3 different problems each child has is actually a lack of the same nutrient(s) in their diet, but affecting each one differently.

Losing-it... I take the flax oil noseclipped so I don't know about the flavor. Can't help you there...  :? If your DH doesn't want to noseclip he can still pinch his nose with his fingers, as I used to do before I had a nose clip.
The liquid oil turns out cheaper than capsules, at least here.
Of course we can use flax oil to season salads and other foods. I have yet to try that with my daughter. She likes olive oil and she seasons her own salad. I might try to talk her into using flax oil instead, at least every other time. I could also buy walnut oil for that effect. At least she likes salmon and sardines... She is a bit aggressive and moody by nature. She's always been pickier than her brother, who's not so temperamental. She also eats more junk food than him (laden with omega 6's which negate omega 3's benefits).
Just yesterday I was reading about how in the 60's and 70's practically there were no cases of ADHD and a lot other conditions in kids, and it was correlated to the fact that kids used to take cod liver oil then, at least in winter.
Wouldn't surprise me if that was true. And I think you're on to something when you say: "Sometimes I wonder if the 3 different problems each child has is actually a lack of the same nutrient(s) in their diet, but affecting each one differently."
The articles you linked are great, along the lines of what I've been reading. Really, you are what you eat... if your daughter is into medicine, including naturopathic, she will come around when she sees everything from a holistic perspective!

Good luck for all of you (you sound like a nice family in spite of all problems)  :)
