The wonderful thing about SLD is that you don't have to actually restrict yourself.  There has never been a point during the last 6 months where I felt like I was being restricted in what I could eat.  I have been eating healthier, for sure, but that's a side effect of the AS for me, not because I'm trying to avoid "bad" foods.  And there are plenty of times when I eat the same old crap I always used to eat, just much much much less of it! -- goblyn

Poll: if you've tried nose-clipping, please take this poll

Nose-clipping is eating food with your nose pressed shut -- with a swimmer's noseclip, for example. Here is a thread about it:

http://boards.sethroberts.net/index.php?topic=1632.0

The question is about the hunger after nose-clipping versus hunger after eating the same food without nose-clipping. Most foods decrease hunger, in the sense that you are less hungry after you eat them than you would have been if you hadn't eaten them. Does the nose-clipping reduce hunger even more?

First I have heard of it. Glad it wasn't a plastic surgery topic!

Logically it makes sense as your sense of smell is linked to taste. That is why elderly people lose weight when they lose their sense of smell.

Dixie! You have to  hang around here more often...the whole forum got the noseclipping fever a few weeks back  ;)

It's working very well for me, though it doesn't feel like quite the same mechanism as the oil. The oil is mysterious like voodoo. The noseclipping is like, okay now I'm full, even if I didn't taste anything. It's like the body goes, "shoot! This eating thing is no fun...I don't want to do it any more."

I don't noseclip meals though. I never noseclip something that would otherwise be enjoyable -- I think that would make me sad. And I suspect I'd have a hard time noseclipping solid food (I have real problems swallowing with my nose blocked. It took some practice). I noseclip soup and smoothies, exclusively.

I love my smoothies. Even noseclipped, they're oddly pleasurable. It took me a while to understand that I truly couldn't taste them, so I might as well throw in anything I think I haven't had enough of that day, taste be damned. I always put fiber and protein powder in them. Sometimes fruit. Sometimes vegetables. Sometimes oil. Sometimes a raw egg. Sometimes coffee grounds. And I usually make them with 1% or skim milk (which I would hate without the noseclip).

Texture is gratifying too.

I hope to be around more now that my kids are in school. :D

I'll go with none of the above.  Tentatively, I'd say :

Noseclipping increases satiety, which is different from the  appetite supression I get with oil.  Someone else made this distinction in the noseclipping thread.  Satiety is more the "overfull" sense; with appetite supression I can feel relatively empty but have no urge to eat.   No surprise I feel stuffed with the smoothie, if  I went with "the more calories, the better" to lower the set point.  But the stuffed sense was not strictly calorie dependent.  A glass of nonfat milk (80 calories, 11g carb, 8g protein) was suprisingly intense on satiety.  A raspberry yogurt (200 calories, 35g carb, 9g protein) gave me moderate satiety, but I got hungry again an hour later.  My initial conclusion on noseclipping is I get great satiety if the carb level is relatively low or is glucose balanced.  I may get appetite supression when I add food with antioxidant or anti-inflammatory value -- my latest hunch.

I've had a very difficult time losing weight even though I've been using the oil for two months now.  Originally lost 6 pounds and get no futher even though taking 5T of oil a day.  But I think maybe I've finnally lost one more pound since I started eating breakfast with the nose clips.  (I keep on the program even though I'm not losing because also I'm not gaining and find there are a lot of other benefits.)

Question: I still taste a lot with the nose clips.  Is this normal.  I made sure the clips are on tight.  I don't smell anything.  I rinse afterward.  Even with plain oatmeal it seems to have a lot of taste.

taste while nose-clipping? yes, that's normal. Tastes such as sweet, sour, salty, and bitter are detected by your tongue -- nose-clipping doesn't prevent that.

I tried my first nose-held smoothies this weekend (haven't got round to buying noseclips yet, so I used thumb and forefinger).  I had three smoothies over the weekend substituting 2 of them for my breakfasts.  I used loads of full fat yoghurt, full fat milk, lashings of honey, peach slices, prunes, and a swig of ELOO - calorie dynamite I would think (I'm not a calorie counter myself).  I took no other oil on those days (except in my food!).

Well, the effect was way better than I would have imagined - surprisingly strong appetite supression.  I felt completely stuffed all day.  Both days, I ended up having a proper meal only for dinner - lunch consisted of (literally) 3 bites of whatever was available (an apple one day, and a sandwich the other).  Today (Monday) I weighed in at my lowest weight yet.  The smoothies were very pleasant to drink, so, if the effects continue, I will probably be using them as a weekend substitute for drinking straight oil (not fun).

I do noseclip my oil when I'm at home and it's convenient. I also sometimes have noseclipped smoothies. They're a wonderful way of whipping up a quick meal and taking advantage of nutritious leftovers (apricots, pumpkin, banana and broccoli, all in one tasteless gulp!)  but I'm not sure they've made a huge difference to my appetite.

I nose clip when I take oil - it makes getting it down without tasting it easier and 'safer'.

While the suggestions I have seen recomend keeping the nose covered for 5 minutes after, I cannot detect any taste after a few seconds. I assume this is because the suggestion was for other kinds of food, with much taste to begin with.

I have had to leave my noseclips on for up to 15 minutes because of the lingering flavors. Urgh.

Obvously, ymmv.

I'm hoping someone will rethink and rewrite all the noseclip posts into an entry in the FAQ.

Please.
