News:

I came across SLD last weekend on the Freakonomics site. I decided to try it and WOW. I have never known anything like the AS effect I get from 2 x 20ml canola oil (known as rapeseed oil in the UK). I've tried various prescription drugs and non-prescription supplements for AS in the past - nothing comes close to this. I can turn down junk food even when it's literally handed to me on a plate - for me that is HUGE. -- sld uk

Oh mamenie I can relate, here I am bouncing up and down on SLD for 8 months now!...My lowest on SLD was 60 kg, just 3.5 kg below my initial weight.
I sympathize and agree with you especially your last paragraph. Now my DH and children laugh at me when they see me noseclipped drinking the oil.
Last evening I was kind of discouraged, still very full from dinner, and didn't take the oil. So, all I took was 2 T sugar in the pm.
It wasn't a real dinner: I got home by 7.15 pm, hungry (I hadn't eaten since 1.30 pm). I had a cup of tea and toasted a roll of bread which I spread real butter on and ate with some ham inside. Then I cooked family's dinner and baked a cake, always nibbling along on dried fruits and nuts. I fried potatoes for the kids and sampled some. Later I ate 2 squares of the cake. By 11 pm I was stuffed.
I don't know - maybe I'm at my setpoint and it can't be lowered? But my all time highest weight was the same until 3 years ago. Only since then did I pile up on the pounds. Then, maybe our setpoints change with age? Maybe my perimenopausal setpoint is my current? I don't know, but I'm giving SLD a chance just till end of January.
Sorry I can't encourage you much... Also I was wondering why your BMI was so high with a relatively low weight... then I realized you are très petite.
Anyway, self control over food is not to be laughed at... maybe we shouldn't quit altogether.

The SW does not give me long lasting AS either, although it does provide short term AS and the longer window necessary keeps me from eating, so I am using it that way--so that it looks like this:

Breakfast:  SW

snack:  oil

lunch: 150 calories of meat and cheese

snack:  SW

second snack some fruit

regular dinner

This is working to keep me from eating, but honestly I don't think it is much more than the longer windows involved that is saving me--

I know Stephen and Jenn have found SW to be like a door slamming shut on their appetite...but I have to say I think I need the combo of oil and SW to get good AS (or to maintain AS while eating sweets and other goodies). The oil seems to be a necessary part (for me) of getting that "I'm so stuffed I couldn't possile keep eating" feeling.

And stopping both occasionally gives me increased AS too. But sometimes the AS comes back quickly and other times it takes quite a while.

I lost a few more pounds last week due to a cold and now my appetite has rebounded and I'm munching away like crazy!  Time to boost my SLD dose from my low maintenance levels back to my losing levels.

Keep tweaking and trying you two!  Hang in there!

That's interesting. Do you take the oil and sugar together or at different times ? Or did you find it makes no difference ?

I fully agree about the usefulness of a longer window. Also, taking the SW forces me to drink water, which I could never bring myself to do if it was not sweetened, and it is supposed to be good. Those are also the two main reasons why I keep doing SW for the time being. But maybe I should add some oil.

Maybe I should be clearer - I lost my weight doing the oil and have really only added in the SW during maintenance. So I'm dealing with lower doses than needed for weight loss - and I'm probably not even getting as many SW calories as I need on days I don't do the oil. (I often plan to have oil in the evening and then don't manage it. SW is during the day, evening or both)

I vary in whether I take the oil and SW at the same time or separately.  Probably separately is the norm.

Both work for me as flavorless calories - but I'm not convinced that they are working in exactly the same way, at a biochemical level (if that's the right way to express it!)
