I'm not even going to update this first post yet, since nobody seems to be doing that anymore.

11/13/07 - 184.7   Back in Shangri-la
11/20/07 - 184.0

Original goal weight: 160.  Changed to 150, 10/2/06
My weight fluctuates; so I record daily and compare the weekly average.

Current SLD:
11/6/07 - NCP (noseclipped protein; 55 calories chicken, 2-3x/day); plus 5 caps fishoil; 1T SW + 1/2T fibersure in hot water 1-2x/day
9/25/07 - 2T ELOO + 1/2T fishoil
6/29 - started meal skipping, with ELOO some of the time.  Fishoil daily still.
6/24 -  stopped oil, CFF, then nothing.  Fast-5  6/29, will try at least alternating days, and add oil if hungry.
6/11/07 - 2T ELOO, am, 6 fishoil bedtime, and CFF (since 4/19/07).   For CFF,  Diluted splenda-sweetened cranberry, or fruit juices, sometimes with fibersure added; coffee, cappuccino; spicy cinnamon or peppermint gum; ACV occasionally.

Formerly:  2-3T ELOO wee hours; tried salt rinsing, noseclipping at least half my non-oil calories, usually 4-6 fishoil caps at bedtime.
- since mid-September, trying to add antioxidants to diet; I think they help with AS, especially satiety
- since 10/3, adding 1t vinegar (non-SLD) with carby meals - but spotty on this, even though I think it helps.
- After surgery, flavors linger for hours.  A new trick 3/1/07:  swish out with saltwater after oil and meals.  Using noseclipping to kickstart my return to old lows.  It's working.

SLD Effects:
Day 1: appetite suppression and disinterest in coffee.
Day 3: serotonin and anti-inflammatory kickers, probably the fish oil.  I have an atypical immediate response to changes in serotonin levels.
Week 2:  softer skin, but my lips were softer with eloo.
Fewer calories = less fiber = constipating
Resting heart rate down 10% (to 49) in the evenings.
Sept: hair fuller, growing fast
Cutting coffee, NSAIDs, and anxiety are all good things for easier weight loss.

Diet/exercise background:
2/10-07 - I got the go-ahead to walk two weeks ago, and have been doing 1/2 hour a day.

Prior: No real exercise, I am getting a hip replacement at the end of this year.  I walk 4000 steps on a “good” day.  Losing 20 pounds before surgery would help, but instead my weight was creeping up.  My diet experience was 3 years ago, on the Heller plan  [2 low carb meals, plus one meal with carbs balanced against protein and lowcarb vegetables, consumed within an hour to prevent insulin response].   It was successful but hard to maintain, and even though I eat 400 calories less than what the charts say I need at rest, I gained.  Having to take NSAIDs doesn't help any.

SLD Changes:
7/17-7/18 - Even though I already had eloo in my diet, I started slow, 1T eloo, mid-afternoon.  Immediate appetite suppression and disinterest in coffee.  Drank lots and lots of icewater.  I spaced my oil midway between meals, giving me two hours without food on either side.

7/19 - Added second dose eloo (1 T.) midmorning, and 3 fish oil capsules at bedtime for the omega-3 benefit.  I timed the eloo to maximize caloric effect during my usual snacking times.  I had swings in appetite suppression the first week, and that’s when the small calorie effect helped.  I had stomach growling that wasn’t really hunger.  The mild stomach discomfort made me want to try something else.

7/26 - Changed to walnut oil for a couple days, then switched the morning dose to CNut.  WO worked right away, but it took a couple days for the CNut  change to settle in.  Walnut is light, nearly tasteless, doesn’t have the yuk effect of eloo, and the oiliness disappears much faster.  No stomach distress.

7/31 – Increased fish oil to 5 capsules.  Appetite suppression seems more steady, longer periods of ‘satisfied’ and fewer cycles between "am I hungry?” and "wow, I’m stuffed!”  That could be SLD duration and have nothing to do with which oil.

8/11 - Appetite supression much weaker all week, so I went back to eloo for the morning dose.  If I use CNut, it will be only occasionally.

8/16 - Adding flaxseed oil as a supplement, starting with two caps, 1300 mg each.

8/25 - trying noseplugged EVOO instead of ELOO.  No conclusions yet; I get no taste, but a rather sharp tongue tang.

9/3 - returning to ELOO for morning dose.  Noseplugged EVOO seemed perfect, but I'm just suspicious that it isn't working -- I get snack attacks in the evening again.

9/24 - started 2T ELOO instead of split dose.  Take with 1t sugarwater if my stomach is unsettled or empty.

10/11 - 2 T ELOO am, 1T WO pm + 6 caps fishoil.

10/19 - trying a mix of EVOO/ELOO for morning dose, well noseclipped.

11/4 - this last week, dropped the EVOO part of the mix.  Seemed to work ok, but after I used only ELOO again, AS is better.  If I had really good EVOO I might try again sometime, or at maintenance if I want oil benefits without as much AS.    While I'm off my advil, I've upped fishoil to 10 caps, so if AS is good, I skip the PM WO dose.

SLD log
7/18 - I took 1T eloo yesterday an hour after lunch, and ended my streak of 'needing' food every couple hours all evening long. I also didn't drink coffee all afternoon. It's obviously too soon to know, but just having that food streak over is a relief.  I assumed this wouldn't work because it wasn't 'real' hunger. I'm intrigued.

7/19- Well, it is hot, but I'm drinking much more water. So I am thinking 'body working to remove excess oil' before I think 'calorie satisfaction without flavor.' Olive oil is beneficial, but is that true when taken alone? Still, it isn't like my stomach is empty - it had lettuce and tuna in it from lunch an hour earlier. I didn’t expect such a big effect from 120 oil calories.

7/20-What blows me away is that a couple hours after I take the oil, I can go munch on tortilla chips -- and stop at two.

7/21- No way I imagined appetite suppression would be like this! Wow, I expected something like what happens in low carb dieting, where constant hunger resolves itself in a few days -- and where I still had to apply vigilance. It isn't anything like that, it's more like the switch shuts completely off.

Why did I try it? Olive oil has benefits. It's outside the mainstream thinking that made America obese. It draws on research previously ignored. If new ideas are met with ridicule, it takes a strongly convinced person to put his professional credibility on the line.

7/22- I wonder if appetite suppression is tryptophan related.  Fat and glucose both raised tryptophan levels in rats.  Caffeine has an impact on tryptophan, as does exercise.  And it’s associated with lowering anxiety/depression, and with weight loss -- appetite?  I don’t understand how tryptophan, serotonin, and melatonin are inter-related, but they are mentioned in research about sleep, mood, memory, the immune system, and weight loss.

7/29- I’m restless, and appetite supression is down.  Drank 3 cups coffee, and ate too much.

7/30 - Changed morning dose to CNut in morning, with 1/8 t. sugar.

7/31 - I thought the CNut wasn’t working as well, but suppression kicked in this afternoon.  It could be it took a couple days for the change to register.

8/1 - kept up with CNut.  Pleasant serotonin effect today, and gentle, steady appetite suppression.  Had a second cup of coffee, I am feeling cold after the heat wave broke.   Strong food smells close to taking the oil set off hunger signals, but they went away within half an hour.  I noticed something similar the other day, when DS asked me to make him a tuna snack.

8/2 – Now taking CNut without the sugar, just to avoid any insulin trigger.

whew!  I'm all caught up.  :D

8/6   I'm another 1.4 pounds lighter.   The weekly loss looks like it's getting smaller and smaller, but that's what I expected.  With my prior diet, I had a blip about every three weeks.  This week, my interday weights were atypically stable, with a fluctuation of a single pound; even when my weight is stable, my numbers for the week vary by 3 pounds, measuring at the same time each day.   I can sneeze and weigh three pounds up or down, it never makes sense.

This week I think I had a small corpuscle leak in my eye, probably not medically accurate, but half my eye was steaked with red.  To be safe, I cut back my fish oil a bit.  My anti-inflammatory needs had been low since I started the fish oil supplements.  Yesterday I lost that rather suddenly; I was limping heavily and my foot swelled.  Earlier in the day I'd been restless, which probably means lower seratonin levels as well.  [I respond to changes within a day.]  5 caps must have been my minimum floor of relief, so I'm going back to that tonight.

Friday I tried a spiced smoothie, and had another one yesterday.  That last one had odd results.  It was my peach-espresso-cinnamon,  pleasant in one way, and as Seth noted the spice taste isn't supposed to be pleasant; but at the same time, it was a truly odd flavor experience.  It didn't taste like one flavor, it was a kaleidoscope of flavor, constantly shifting.  I'd been focused on food and had heightened taste sensations earlier in the day.   No, I haven't switched to hemp oil.   [joke, I know hemp is different, anyway...]

The smoothie gave me an extremely strong appetite supression effect, totally stuffed.  Dinner was five hours later and I was still stuffed.  I ate a tiny bit and could barely taste it.  Later I had to make myself take my walnut oil, still stuffed.  Also, about four hours after smoothie, I got an odd sensation that was maybe thermogenesis:  the distinct feeling of being very warm, although house and personal temperatures were both fine.  That sensation lasted all night.  I was kinda hoping for a whoosh effect this morning, but no such luck.  It may still happen, after I get the anti-inflammatory effect working again.  I'm doing wonderfully on weight, anyway.  Eight pounds in 3 weeks is a miracle.

Another nice thing:  I lost 1.5" on my waist the first week, and it's 2" now.  That feels so much better!  Which leads me to more speculation, that 'apples' may find it easier to drop the weight on SLD.  Last night while I was browsing about thermogenesis, I found some old (1989) research supporting a difference:

Quote
Resting metabolic rate (RMR) and diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT), induced by 100 g glucose given orally, were measured in two groups of obese women, characterized by the abdominal or gluteal-femoral type of obesity. No difference in RMR was found between the two groups. Obese women with an abdominal fat mass distribution have a higher and more prolonged DIT in comparison with gluteal-femoral obese women. This finding may help explain why women with upper body obesity are more able to lose weight than women with lower body obesity.

8/13 - down 0.6 pounds this week.  Appetite supression has been weaker, and I'd already adjusted my eating habits for SLD.  I haven't got back the anti-inflammatory effect I lost last week.   I've eaten quite a bit of fruit this week.  I really wanted that instead of a meal, even, but the sweetness interest took over.  I could smell nectarines from across the room, and I wanted more.  So two days ago, I stopped CnO and reverted back to eloo for the morning dose.  Instant appetite supression in the morning.  I'm still taking WO in the evening, and 5 FO caps at night.

My plan for this week:  pay more attention to appetite supression, and apply the eating brakes when needed.

Wonderful information--great results!

I've have increased interest in raw tomatoes and peach/nectarines as well on this 'method'. Please keep on letting us know about the anti-imflammatory effects.

The anti-inflammatory effect is partially back today; reduced foot swelling, and at the same time I swooshed down two pounds.  I'm still hoping for some joint relief again, too.  Yesterday my appetite was totally supressed, but today I'm having to watch out for false signals.

update 8/15:  the anti-inflammatory effect is back, I can sit without discomfort.

Bekel, maybe the fruit interest is because Vitamin C is needed for breaking down the EFAs?  I run low on Vitamin C because my lip splits from it, except I could eat more fruit when I was pregnant, and now, so it sounds like it's something I need more of at the moment.

8/20 -  5 weeks, -1.4 pounds.  This week I averaged 172.6.  Yay!  The last four days my weight didn't vary at all, which is unusual for me.  Today, I was up a pound and a half.  I got into another fruit mood and had some plums yesterday that I was hoping would fix constipation tendencies.  Nothing yet.   But I did get the idea last night that I need to add an extra Vitamin C supplement, since my body is telling me what it wants loud and clear.  Eating like this, with no sense of deprivation, I'm very happy with my progress.

The fruit thing is weird. I've never been a fruit eater. Fruit was always something I liked the idea of, but I'd buy it and it would go bad before I ate it.

Now, I'm ALL OVER fruit. I've started eyeballing the weird fruits in the market that I can't identify, wondering how they taste.

8/27 -  171.9,  down 0.7 pounds this week.   The pattern that has emerged from my daily weighings is: bounce for 10 days or so, then drop for a few days.  It's averaging a pound a week, which I am very happy with.

I've been reading some things that suggest extra virgin olive oil is far healthier than eloo.  So when the store was out of walnut, I got some EVOO to try noseplugging with.  I haven't tasted the oil to see how strong it is.  When I took it for SLD, I got a sharp tongue tang, so I drank plenty of water before unplugging.  I didn't get any taste per se, but I did get a whoosh of more tang, so I'm not sure if plugging will work.  I had one battle with the ditto food monster last night (I lost) but no residual appetite today.  What may have contributed was that I cut out my oil the night before, since we had salmon and the idea of more oil...  Next time that happens, I'll sip sugarwater.   [Evening update: appetite supression working overtime.  I think the EVOO tang is phenols, perhaps.]

The push for fruit continues.  Frenata, when I went shopping, I was also very conscious of the visual interest of fruit.  And onions, too, although they were not of high quality, so I didn't get any.  But I did get some green onions.  Now I guess I'll have to go read what onions have in them.   :)  I froze the rest of my plums so I can have tastes without feeling obligated to eat them before they spoil.

This past couple weeks, I've had a few bad pain days and added my NSAIDs again; it showed up in a weight bounce (up) 3 days later.  I'm tracking now to see how repeatable that effect is over time.

One new side benefit:  either my BP monitor broke, or I've just dropped about 20 points.  That could be the oil, or the indirect benefit from being able to reduce my NSAIDs, that part definitely is an oil benefit.

Neat, TalkingRat!

I tried the noseclipped EVOO as well, but had rejected it due to too much mouth and throat sensation (especially all the burning from the fruit acids). I figured that was just too likely to develop an association, and chickened my way back to coconut oil. Let us know how things continue--especially the EVOO!

And a big congrats on losing pressure! Just don't lose altitude. Heh heh.

It hurts when the scale goes the other way.  Today was my highest weight in three weeks, and my 7 day rolling average is climbing.  :(

I am now tracking my advil, and the weight effects show up even faster than I thought, just a day later the uptick starts.  But I needed the advil this week.

Some good things about this week: I got a new Omron scale, and threw out my two useless ones.   And I got noseplugs.   :D

I'm still not sure about the EVOO.  The sting tells me there's some some anti-inflammatory content, which I can really use, and my appetite supression seems good, it's more that I'm eating "through" it.  I know advil makes me want to eat to settle my stomach, so I don't think it's EVOO's fault, but if I don't figure out the eating solution this week, I will go back to ELOO to be sure.  I'm willing to accept slower weight loss when I have to take advil, but it's turning into a gain.  Ugh!

The low blood pressure thing was temporary.  After a week of really low levels, I spiked high for a few days, and am now back to my usual levels.   My nonscientific mind visualized chunks of plaque stuck in my arteries, being flushed away by EVOO and fishoil.  I've obviously been watching too many animated drug commercials.

OK, I love my ELOO!  I switched back, and appetite supression hit me like a rock again.  Yipee!  The EVOO seemed like a great idea, flavorless with plugged nose.  But it just wasn't the same and the last two evening I was eating snacks, that's plural.  No way I even want to look at a snack tonight.

I'm going to try to cut the advil for a couple days and see if I can get the weight loss back again.  So when it hurts, I take a couple flaxseed oil caps.  They seem to add to the sense of being stuffed.  So that's the plan this week.
