The Shangri-La Diet > Progress/Updates
Allison - Week 1, Day 5
Allison717:
I'm posting my findings/experiences on one of my blogs at http://ftlog.meanderwithme.com/category/shangri-la/ Please stop in and leave comments if you have them!
Here's a brief "about me:"
Allison, 34 years old, with a 19-month old daughter.
I was already about 10 pounds above my ideal weight of 125 pre-pregnancy, then gained 60 pounds with pregnancy. 195 on 5'3" frame made me a very ROUND preggy girl! Within 2 weeks of my daughter's birth, 20 pounds of the 60 had vanished (water). I fought HARD for the next five-six months to lose another 25-30 pounds.
Once I got to within 10 pounds of my previous all-time-heavy weight, I stalled. While set-point might have contributed to this somewhat, I think that complacency contributed even more. I was back into a size 12, which, while bigger than I'm comfortable wearing, was at least familiar to me. Since March 2005, I've been stuck between 143-153.
I've always had a tendency to use food as a drug-of-choice when I need emotional support. While I've never been obese (other than immediately post-pregnancy), I know that I most definitely have some disordered thinking about food, and I hope this method will help with that.
So far, I've tried both sugar water and canola oil (today's only my second day). I have a couple theories about which may work better for me and why, but I plan to try a few combinations until I hit on the magic number for me. Any suggestions?
Allison717:
Since I didn't post this yesterday...I'm 5'3"
Weight so far:
Day 1: 150.4
Day 2: 151.6
Day 3: 149.8
I'm doing 3 doses per day, because that "feels" right to me for dampening my urges to snack. In general, my doses are
1) between breakfast and lunch,
2) between lunch and dinner and
3) sometime after 8 or 9 pm.
On day one, I did sugar/sugar/oil, and felt fine. Day two, sugar/oil/sugar...and I felt absolutely horrible after the oil dose. After the sugar doses, I usually feel very good, almost euphoric. Haven't decided which approach to take today, but I'd better get on with breakfast regardless!
Allison717:
Weight: 149.8 / 26.5 BMI
Yesterday's doses: 2T sugar times two (midmorning, midafternoon), then 1.5T canola at night.
While I didn't wake up hungry today, I'm a complete space cadet. Seriously, I'm having difficulty even walking from one room to the next without forgetting why I'm there! I'm starting to think of putting away my coffee pot so that I can better evaluate my mental moods -- after the first "withdrawal week" anyway.

Full commentary on today blogged here. I'm really wondering about the possibility of the sugar and oil affecting brain chemistry -- and if so, what are the implications for continuing this program longterm?
Allison717:
Today's stats: same weight, same BMI. I'll likely switch to only posting weight/BMI on a weekly basis.
Yesterday's experiment with moving to sugar only (no oil) is working *very* well so far... my mood has improved in general, and while I get hungry, I don't eat to excess and my choices are more healthful. I plan to stick to sugar water only for at least 2-3 more days before tinkering with oil again, if ever.
One more change I plan to make starting tomorrow: sugar water first thing in the morning, rather than between breakfast and lunch. With our morning routine, I tend to be focused on getting my daughter fed more than getting myself fed, and as a result, breakfast is more of a series of small things at sporadic times. Drinking the sugar water first thing in the morning, then waiting an hour would be much easier than creating the timeframe after breakfast...case in point, it's nearly 12:30, and I'm only now about to have my first sugar dose of the day! That means lunch will be very late...which means dinner will be even later...and the cycle continues.
I hadn't posted this here, but my goal BMI is 22ish, btw...somewhere in the 120-125 range. With my bone structure and the amount of muscle I carry, anything much lower than that, and I do not look well.
Question for anyone reading: I've seen many people who have issues with sugar water, but do well on oil. Am I the only person who's found the opposite?

No, I found the sugar water worked much better at killing my appetite compared to the oil.
