my mother's and grandmother's cuisine was very unspicy; I grew up with that. my husband likes it HOT!, so I was always adding spices to his meal. now I started playing around with different spices (still don't like it hot) and enjoy the different tastes.  I am glad Seth has got us into spicing our foods - different flavors are tasty.

My inquiry concerns the use of artificial sweeteners - both in smoothies and in milk. How about using Nutrasweet instead of Splenda??? I live in Europe and Splenda is not yet widely available. Any suggestions anyone?

I use Stevia; natural non-caloric sweetener.

I tend to use naturally sweet stuff like fruits when I want something sweet. Smoothies always contain fruit on my watch. Milk based stuff, I tend to avoid artificial sweeteners. I weened myself off of needing added sweetness. I used to take 2 teaspoons of sugar in my coffee whilst I was growing up.

The crazy spicing appeals to me because I love to cook and am always trying new spices.  I was just wondering, has anyone
thought of adding flavorings such as vanilla extract, almond or lemon extracts, etc.,?  Are these flavorings allowed to be used
with crazy spicing?

I'm trying the crazy spice smoothie for the first time.  It's pretty good.  I ordered the spice blend from Penzeys Spices online (www.penzeys.com).  I followed Seth's original recipe on the first entry for this thread.  I did have to add a little more half and half though (about 4 tbs instead of 2) since my blender was having a hard time crushing the ice.  I used 1/4 tsp or 4 different blends.  It has a little bit of a spicy kick to it, but all in all it is rather tasty.  I'm into my second month of SLD and seem to be going backwards instead of forward.  I've gained back 3 of the 8 pounds I had lost so I'm gonna try this crazy spice smoothie route to see if I can replace lunch w/ it.  I bought several bags of frozen fruits (mango, strawberries, blackberries, mixed berries & mixed fruit) that I will be using to make each one different.  Here's to getting back on track w/ my weight loss.  Cheers.

Glad to hear you're trying it. "The" spice blend? How many did you order? I started with about 20 and randomly chose 3 or 4 each time.

Thanks.  I ordered 11 small jars.  I used 4 of them yesterday.  I'm happy to say, the smoothie held me until dinner so I was able to use it as a substitute for lunch.  Let's see if it will have the same affect today.  I just had my oatmeal w/ raisins and orange juice for breakfast.

I'm happy to report that today's smoothie also filled in for my lunch meal.  I added a few pieces of frozen mango to the mix today as well as some skim milk.  I don't have the best blender in the world which means I have to have more liquid in order for it to blend and chop the ice and frozen fruit well enough to eat with a spoon.  Drinking w/ a straw was next to impossible since I still have some chunks of ice in it.  The smoothie was OK, not as tasty as the first one, but it grew on me after the first couple of spoon fulls.  I'm still not hungry for dinner yet.  I had 2 tbsp. of ELOO at 5:00 pm.  It's 6:07 pm now.  I use a soy protein powder that's unflavored and unsweetened and has 0 carbs.  One serving has 13 grams of protein.  I'm pretty pleased w/ the crazy spicing smoothies.

Do the spices need to completely alter the taste of the shake?

I find that protein powder is usually very strongly flavored (usually with artificial "ice cream" flavors like chocolate, vanilla or strawberry). Even one I bought that was labeled as "natural flavor" tasted strongly of vanilla.

So I assume that even with two teaspoons of spice blends added there would still be a strong undertone of this flavor that wouldn't change from day to day. Would that affect the ability of the shake to cause AS?

I think it is like visual recognition: if you put enough stuff on top of an R or X or whatever, you fail to recognize it. Maybe we have 3000 smell receptors. Vanilla is a certain pattern of activation. If you activate enough other receptors, you stop being able to recognize vanilla.

But I think the answer to your question is: Yes, it might. If it were me, however, I would just try it and see what happens.

I apologize, but I have no idea what you talked about. I am new, from Sweden and I don't know why you do such mixture, where is an oil in it? I have not such products in my country as you mentioned. What this mixture is for? I drink the oil maybe 2 weeks, unfortunately I don't know when I started - it is oil from Linum seeds which contains 54% Omega3. It smells fish and I hate it, I almost spy. I increased amount because I have not lost more as a hekto and went up again, despite I increased oil to 4 table spoons  (mixed with a mixer in about a glass of water) and even one more time the same day 2 table spoons again. I feel sick after, but I have even more aptite for something tasty! I used to eat very little and I went up all the time anyway.
I had a spinal surgery and I was 6 months in bed. In this time I've lost 12 kg eating very little, I felt sick all the time.  But when i tried to go and even went to exercise (rehabilitation) twice or 3 times a week, and I did not eat really more (before I almost ate like a bird), my weght started rapidly go up! Since December 2006 I have got back my high weight and even more. I am 155 cm long and I weight now 71 kg. Nothing helps. Only effect is that I don't go up now! I eat really not more, but maybe a little different food. When I tried before diets with the same protein powder or other "food" like that, I was near to get crazy, I don't manage such diets. eating is only pleasure in my life. Anyway I don't eat nothing really I like (as a bread, nuddles, pancakes, cakes or sweet fruits, or chocklad) I never eat sweets, very, very seldom a little cake, 30-40 g dark bread a day, a halv of potato, very little meat, some vegetable and a glas daily sour milk (not yogurt, I make it myself.) And I started drink oil - in the middle of the day, between a breakfast and a dinner. I dont' loose weight.

Dear Banta,
I am new to the forum, but have been trying SLD for a few months now.  I am very successful when I use the Extra Light Olive oil two times a
day.  I would caution anyone using flaxseed oil, it is not a good choice for humans.  A researcher I know says it is not good for cell
wall integrity, I guess you could look this up in Pubmed.  I had a very bad experience with flaxseeds that I would blend and put in shakes
or on my yogurt.  The seed case on the flaxseed has a toxin in it.  I was using three tablespoons flaxseed a day and I became very depressed, got
terrible headaches, became constipated, forgetful, and very tired.  I began gaining weight because of the toxic load.  I called a woman that is a specialist at a university in North Dakota (they grow most of it for the nation) and I told her what was going on and she cautioned me not to use more than one tablespoon a day of the seeds.  A fellow I spoke to with the FDA said you can use three tablespoons but no more.  I asked why no one is
putting caution notices on the bags?  He had no reply.  My headaches where so bad I had an MRI done and thank God everything was fine.
I quite the flaxseed and my headaches are gone and so are most of my other symptoms now.  But it sure made a tired person out of a very active positive person.  It took several years to feel normal again.  The toxin in flaxseed is called thiocyanate (which is only one step away from cyanide) and it is very hard on the thyroid gland.  Many plants that are edible have this toxin but flaxseed has the highest amount.  You cannot consume flaxseed like peanuts because it is just not food.  I use fish oil now to get my Omega3.
Hope you have better luck with the Extra Light Olive Oil
Love,
Flabba
