I came across SLD last weekend on the Freakonomics site. I decided to try it and WOW. I have never known anything like the AS effect I get from 2 x 20ml canola oil (known as rapeseed oil in the UK). I've tried various prescription drugs and non-prescription supplements for AS in the past - nothing comes close to this. I can turn down junk food even when it's literally handed to me on a plate - for me that is HUGE. -- sld uk

Is a US Tablespoon the same as a British tablespoon?
« on: May 04, 2006, 02:54:00 am »

Hi everyone,

I just started this yesterday and am so far very impressed  :D . I woke up this morning a pound and a half down, but what with water weight etc, this could be meaningless. But it made me smile nonetheless  :) .

Anyhow, back to my main question - I am English and we have different systems of measurements over here in many cases. For instance, our gallon is bigger than your US gallon. I am wondering whether your tablespoon is the equivalent of our dessertspoon? I tried to measure out a tablespoon of oil this morning (using one of my baby's bottles as a measuring guide) and my tablespoon appears to be just over 20ml. Whereas, I had thought that a tablespoon measurement was meant to be about 15ml. My dessertspoon did seem to be about 15ml, but the baby bottle isn't a very accurate measuring device, so I'm left unsure?

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Many thanks!

According to Google it is around 15 ml to 1 US tbsp.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=14.8ml+in+tbsp

Another way to do the calculation is by calories.  The two US tbsp of oil I took this morning total up to 240 calories.  Just do the math on the oil you are using to get around 250 calories (or whatever amount is appropriate for you).  Good luck!  :D

Thanks Will! I think it must be different in that case. Our tablespoons are enourmous things and are used as serving spoons... In fact, maybe that's what you call them - serving spoons? Anyway, I put three of my huge tablespoons of sugar into a half a litre of water yesterday morning and pretty much gagged it was so sweet. I thought - how on earth am I supposed to drink this twice a day? But today, after I thought it over, I put two dessertspoons (15ml) worth of sugar in my glass and it was much more palatable  . Doh!

spacehoppa -  Happy to help.  In the states (or at least my experience) we have two major spoon sizes, teaspoon (tsp) and tablespoon (tbsp).  According to Google
1 US tablespoon = 3 US teaspoons.  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=1tbsp+in+tsp
1 US tablespoon = 14.7867648 ml.  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=1tbsp+in+ml

In the UK apparently teaspoons and  tablespoons are a bit bigger, but the ratio of tablespoon to teaspoon is the same, 3 to 1:
1 Imperial tablespoon = 17.7581714 ml.  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=1UK+tbsp+in+ml
1 Imperial teaspoon = 5.91939047 ml.  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=1UK+tsp+in+ml

As Seth and others have mentioned you want to get a between 100-400 cals per day via a flavorless source.  People shouldn't worry about the specific volume (milliliters, tablespoons, ounces, whatever), and more about the calories since that is what seems to trigger your body to remove hunger pangs.
