Title: Starting week 4, down 6 pounds.
Post by: xt92879 on May 15, 2006, 06:56:47 AM
Hi all,

I'm brand new here! I read about the diet online at livejournal, then was convinced to buy the book by Stephen M's blog posts. I read it pretty quickly and like many have said, it does seem too good to be true, but I started it yesterday anyway. I'm doing sugar water in the morning and oil in the evening. I guess we'll see how it goes!  :P

I've got my fingers crossed that it works! I've been dieting & exercising, but my scale won't budge :( Plus, I get very caught up in thinking, "I only have one life, do I want to spend it worrying about my weight?" so it's hard for me to deny myself foods.  :?

I'm planning to keep up with my workouts (60-75 minutes cardio 4x a week) and try the shangri-la diet. I've already told my best friend and my mother about it. Even if people aren't considering trying the diet, I think the book is a really interesting read. I might pick up some copies as gifts.

Wish me luck!

okay, so this is only Day 2, but what I'm experiencing now is unprecedented.

It's roughly 3:30ish in the afternoon where I'm at. This is that time of the day where I'm pretty much done with my work, kinda bored, and I start to SNACK.

I'm feeling a little hungry (I think it's more like I miss DOING something - gum is out because of dental work), but surprisingly, amazingly, there is NOT a bag of Hershey's kissables in front of me. No! They are all downstairs, tidy and safe in the vending machine. In fact, there are several large bags of candy mere feet away and I don't want ANY!

Amazing. Amazing.  :D :D :D

I feel like I've been digesting ALL day though. It could be this pasta dish I had for dinner last night (I thought it was the oil), or ir could be that I ate too much at lunch (a healthy choice meal, but didn't eat it all). I don't know. I feel FULL. Like, noticably, always-on-my-mind- FULL.

I'm not gonna knock it....even if it is all psychosomatic for now (because I just read the book, and I REALLY want it to work).

I'm feeling this same way. I keep trying to blame loss of appetite on something else...anything...but theres nothing else to blame it on but this diet! I cannot believe this is really true...please dont wake me up!

I think it's all water, but maybe it's not...

as of this morning I weigh 2 pounds less!

(personally, I think it's all the exercise I did last week FINALLY paying off).

BUT, I ate dinner (and dessert) last night, and then had my oil, and went out to one of my very favorite restaurants with friends and didn't order a thing. And didn't want to! And refused several offers of food and wine and treats. Just felt full.

I am, however, waking up about an hour earlier than I need to, and STARVING. Suggestions??

Are you taking the oil or sugar water early in the morning? if so, take them 3 or more hours later.

I take the sugar water around 9:30 each morning, and the oil in the evening after dinner. (usually around 7pm).

maybe if I move everything to later, I won't be starving when I wake up...

I'm pretty new myself, xt, having only started on 5/11.

That being said, just experiment a bit to see what works as to timing and dosage.  I've generally been doing the flavor fast and de-appetizer (sometimes ELOO, sometimes sugar water) in the morning and afternoon with lots of good result and no bad result, but we're all a little different in our reactions.

My calorie intake is consitstently under half what it was before SLD, but it's still been 1600 - 2100 calories/day.  Maybe either your de-appetizer or calorie intake was too low?

I feel like I'm losing weight, but am only going to weigh on Thursday afternoons, so nothing definite there.

Hey, I just checked out your blog. Keep it up! Maybe I'm missing something? What's this about a flavor fast? Should I not be eating breakfast?

Argh.

Okay. I'm going to do this:

tonight, take my ELOO before I go to bed (can't go to bed without brushing my teeth).
tomorrow, eat breakfast, take the sugar water in the afternoon

repeat.

We'll see how that works.

I've been eating pretty normal meals, just no snacking. I'm starving now though, so it's off to lunch for me...

I'm also going to re-read the book today, to see if there's something I'm missing. Maybe I need to up my amounts?

Flavor fast is my own term to describe the time during which you fast from all flavored things - at least one hour pre and one hour post taking the de-appetizer of ELOO or sugar-water.  Just seemed like an easier way to say it.

well yesterday I ended up doing sugar water in the morning, and again in the afternoon - because I was just feeling so hungry. I went to the gym for an hour, came home & ate dinner and took my oil around 9pm.

I am still waking up really early (5:15 this morning) but today was the first day I wasn't starving. So I guess that's progress.  :)

I think I'm going to switch to just the oil, as I think I'm one of those people who gets hungry after the sugar. I think the best times for me to do it are going to be after lunch (at 3pm, as I eat from 1pm - 2pm) and then right before I go to bed (9pm or 10pm, as I go to bed at 10pm or 11pm).

I wonder if this will work better?

I think I'll employ the sugar water on weekends and vacations, as my roommate works at a starbucks & I spend a lot of time there (waiting for laundry, etc. etc.) and it's easy to get on vacations...but the oil might be for me....which means I need to go buy a bigger bottle!

GRRR. I was sitting here READING THIS FORUM and popped a piece of gum in my mouth - 20 minutes after I took the oil.

I remembered fairly quickly and took it out, but GRRR nonetheless.  :x

As long as you don't do it on a consistent basis you will be fine.  The diet is pretty flexible about that kinda thing.  Don't beat yourself up about it.

Oh, I know, I was just so surprised I'd done it while reading NOT to do it!! :) Thanks!

(more for my tracking than anything else)

Fell asleep last night before I could take dose # 2. Wicked hungry after workout, and very tired as well.

Took one dose of oil this morning at 10:10.

Not using sugar anymore.

Haven't gained, but haven't lost either :(

Besides being hungry after your workout, how has your hunger level been overall?  And how long on just oil and not sugar?
Title: Re: Brand new!

Yesterday was my first day of just oil.

The sugar just makes me hungry. I start counting the minutes until I can eat again when I took it.

my hunger level has pretty much remained the same. I'm still eating the same at meals, but just not snacking...unfortunately, I really think I'm not snacking because I feel like "I'm on a diet" instead of because I actually don't want anything.

I'm hoping that once I"ve been on the oil twice a day for a few more days...this will kick in.

..I hope.

I do think a big part of my problem is that I'm not eating as much breakfast as I should...so I'm going to try and change that.

So Friday I took 2 tbsp in the morning, but felt so sick by the afternoon (everything was running through my system) that I left work early and didn't take any that evening or at all on Saturday. On Sunday I took 2 tbsp midday (11am).

Today I'm going to try to get back to my regular routine (2 mid day and 2 late evening).

after reading in some other forums though, I'm curious... should I cut back my amount? I'm taking 4 tbsp a day = 480 calories. I know this is above the amount, but the book does say 2 and 2, right? I want to lose 30-40 pounds.

Advice?

Thanks.

2 T. at a time was making me pretty queasy, too, but it wasn't really affecting my system.

480 calories a day is a lot extra.  Seth says 200-400 calories in oil or SW a day.  Someone else posted 10-20% of your total calories.  No way was I eating 2400 calories a day!  So I've cut back to 300 calories of oil, 1500 total calories.  Stomach feels great at only 1-1/2 T. midmorning, 1 T. midafternoon, and weight loss is right where I want it to be.  Am actually eating only about 1250 calories a day and feeling very satisfied all day long.  I am going to be losing 45-50 pounds if all goes well.

quick update:

I'm down 2 more pounds. So that's 6 since 5/14.

I've cut back my oil. I'm doing 2 tablespoons in the late morning and that's it. I might up it to three though, and spread it out over the day. I'm having a pretty shitty time at life right now, so the diet hasn't been my #1 priority.

Hopefully updates will continue in a more timely fashion.

best wishes to you all.

Golly, I take a week off and there are so many changes!

Last week was the worst I've had in my 26 years. I am not exaggerating.

I took my oil down to 2 tbsps over the weekend. I haven't weighed myself because it is my TOM and I'm not happy about getting on the scale. I am considerably less hungry, so that's something. I think I'm upping the oil to 3tbsp total from now on.

I'll weigh myself at the gym tonight, so maybe we'll see some progress.

Good luck to you all.

I'm sorry you've been having troubles!  Maybe when you get on the scale next you'll have lost a little and it'll give you a boost.  I know I always get kind of embarrassingly happy the mornings that I'm down. :D

I do a DANCE OF JOY when I'm down.

And I am sure to tell everyone about it. Even my cat.

Nothing to be embarrassed about!!!

I could use a boost though, so here's hoping!

OMG THAT DAY is here!!!

The day when:

clothes that used to be tight are no longer tight!

and the day that a box of brownies need not be afraid of being eaten all at once. I can't believe I've had that box since the weekend and there are still brownies in it.

Amazing.

Although, it could be that my roommate hasn't found the box yet....

So my weight is back up (I checked yesterday).  :(   :x

This is disappointing, but I did cut back on my oil, and I haven't been to the gym either.

I want to go back to 4 tbsp a day. I know it's 80 calories too many, but it worked for me before...I don't see why it would be such a huge problem. As long as the bad GI effects go away. I've been taking the oil almost daily since the 14th of May, so I hope my body is used to it by now.

I've put 4 lbs. back on. I'm hoping it's either water weight, or fluctuation due to my period. We'll see. At any rate, my appetite is still way down (didn't even eat dinner last night - wasn't starving this morning) and I"m hitting the gym again starting today. I'd really like those 4 lbs. back OFF, along with 4 more. Then I'd be at the goal I'd set for myself for the end of May.

I've noticed that I have trouble finding a second time to take the oil. 3pm is working out really well for me, and I'd like to do it later in the evening, but I wonder is 8 or 9pm too close to 3pm? The issue is that I have brush my teeth before bed, and I want to get to bed at 10ish. I guess I just think that 3pm & 9pm are too close together to stave off my hunger in mornings. I find myself most hungry in the mid-morning.

Thoughts?  :?

While I was in the process of going from 185 to 150, at one point I gained 5 pounds. From one big meal and perhaps measurement error. Don't take day to day fluctuations seriously.

I'm back down! Hurray!!!

I was conservative with the oil over the weekend - only 2tbsp per day. Yesterday I just felt too sick to take it. :(

I'm finding that it's best for me to take it on an empty stomach.

Additionally, my sleep patterns are changing again. Now I can't get to sleep until midnight or 1 (and this is with a klonopin in my system!) and I'm still getting up around 5:30 (an hour+ earlier than I need to). I'm not excessively tired during the day though, so I guess it's okay. I think things will get back to normal once I start hitting the gym again.  There have been a few issues that have kept me away for a couple of weeks.

So I think I'm going to get my routine down to what I've got written in my signature file. This week is a little screwy, with plans, and going out of town on Friday, but I am going to try to get back to the gym.

I'm feeling pretty up still about the SLD - I feel like my appetite is really, really low. I'm still eating roughly 3 meals a day, but the amounts are drastically less. I do find that it's hard to keep up on the weekends, what with no set schedule, but I'm working on that. Hopefully that will kick my weightloss back into shape. Sorry, bad puns.

I've found myself pretty hungry around id-morning lately, but I think that's because I had cut my oil back, so today I'm back on track. Lately naps have interfered with the schedule...

I've also found that I'm feeling a lot of "digestion" feelings lately - not hunger, just...activity. I've noticed that things that used to appeal to me - very sugary/very salty aren't really on my radar so much. I'm also not wanting any carbs. It's really strange, but I've got a loaf and a half of bread in my fridge, and all the makings for several turkey sandwiches....untouched! I went to target and the grocery store yesterday and no chips were purchased at all! Insane, I tell ya.

What still DOES appeal to me: Juice & ice cream. Anything cold or wet. It's weird, but not altogether bad, as I'm drinking more water now.

I need to go weigh myself at lunch, but I really don't want to. According to my often less-than-accurate scale at home, I might be down one more pound. Which would be awesome.
