Title: Avocado Oil?
Post by: nicola on July 02, 2006, 01:21:45 PM
I just bought a wee bottle of avocado oil and had a taste . . . I think it's pretty low flavor. I'm trying to break the canola habit with coconut, but I think it may be too full flavored.

Of all the beneficial oils mentioned, I haven't seen any references to avocado . . . has anyone tried it?

Hi,

I also have a bottle of avocado oil! :) I only use it on salads and on my skin. Let me know if you use it for SLD and how it goes... I might give it a try also. Now I use Canola oil which I am very happy with, but thinking of experimenting a little...

Ciao

Good for you for getting off the canola. I think canola oil is totally man-made, toxic, a GMO now,  and I can't believe people are taking Ts of it every day! Avocado oil and olive oils would be better because they have less polyunsatured fat. Think about it, the only traditional oils that humans have been using for many generations have been olive and coconut. Most of our fat has come from animal sources where is is naturally saturated.

Coconut oil is fantastic for too many health reasons to write here. I noseclip the VCO and chase with tons of water, being careful to wipe my mouth and breath through my mouth for a minute after. You can also buy refined coconut oil which I think is tasteless and still healthy. I buy VCO from mountainroseherbs.com by the 5 gallon bucket since it keeps for 2 years. If I didn't have so much (which I cook with) maybe I'd use refined for SLD...

You can get refined coconut oil which is virtually tasteless here in the US at Wallmart.  The brand is Lou Anna.  I've been using that and peanut oil since I started and have lost 20 pounds so far.  For the coconut oil I just swallow it in one gulp through a shot glass and chase with water being careful to breath only through my mouth for a few seconds.  I tried to nose clip but I couldn't figure out how to  swallow without my ears popping.

Take care
Brian

I've used Avocado Oil for SLD. It worked fine. Sometimes I combined it with ELOO and/or other oils. I'm using ELOO at the moment. My favorites have been ELOO, Macademia Nut Oil, and Coconut Oil (many people don't seem to do well AS-wise with the latter).

Thank you for your input! I love VCO, but I only use it to cook with since it is so expensive and I absolutely love the flavor, I donīt want to noseclip it. For stirfries it is great because of it being saturated and thus stable in heat.

Please help me get things straight... I totally agree that VCO and avocado oil is good for the health. But what is not healthy about rapeseed oil? I know there are alot of opinions about canola/rapeseed oil. Does anybody have any information about it?

I use good quality, coldpressed rapeseed oil and actually believe it is healthier than ELOO which is raffined... What is meant by rapeseed oil being "man-made"? It is pressed from rapeseeds just like EVOO is pressed from olives and VCO is pressed from coconuts. And it is also not a "new" oil. It has been used for many many centuries in northern europe where there have never been any olives or coconuts.

Please tell me what you think!

You're right.  Canola or rapeseed is another traditional oilseed.  Canola is an improved rapeseed, modified by natural selection (by Canadian agriculturalists, hence the name), long before genetically modified anything was available.  I agree that there may very well be GMO canola in the really cheap oils, so I use an organic, but refined canola, that I find pretty much flavourless.  I've had really good results with it, re AS, weight loss, etc, and no negative side effects that I've noticed.  I'm tempted to try ELOO just based on what I've read here, but I really hate to mess with success.  Maybe when I get to my goal, I might try it for a change.

I get nervous when I hear on the news about "Roundup Ready Canola".  That sounds genetically modified to me!!
